Rest in Peace - Elder Florence James

Dear Thetis Community,

Penelakut Elder Dr. Florence James (born Sept 11, 1947) passed into the Spirit world on Sunday, June 15th. She was buried in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens beside her husband Gil James on June 19th after a community service at Stz’uminus Gym. Florence is survived by her son Rocky and her sister Marguerite.

She was a respected Knowledge Holder and Hul'q'umi'num language expert, a devout educator and ecologist, a loving mother, sister, auntie, mentor and friend to many. Above all, Florence was gentle, wise, generous, and loving. She lived her faith and beliefs with great integrity and respect for all beings. She was most passionate about caring for and educating the youngest ones among us, believing in them for our future. Florence will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

I am happy to coordinate support from Thetis Islanders who wish to contribute financially to Florence's family in support of her service, internment and hosting.

Respectfully, Kelly Bannister

Community Celebration Event: Thank You

We sincerely thank the many, many people of all ages who participated in Saturday’s wonderful event.
It was a gathering full of friendship and happiness, all that we had hoped for, including the weather!

It was obvious that people were there to have a good time with their friends, neighbours and families; with children scooting about, people enjoying the yummy BBQ served up by Joe Knowles and team, their joy at the plentiful array of handcrafted ice cream treats, and all ages dancing to the great music of Headlong Hearts. It gave us all a chance to appreciate being within our community.

The strongest sentiment that seemed to be on repeat – why doesn’t the community do this every year?

With thanks,
TICA Board

Can You Give Us a Hand?

The spring growth on the island’s trails needs taming and we simply can’t manage it by ourselves. Can you spare an hour or two to help us trim back the grass and cut back the blackberries? We’d sure appreciate any help you can give us. The Lawrence Community Trail, Lawrence Valley Loop and the Dingly Dell all need maintenance.

If you can help, please call Vicki Walker at 250-246-9126 or email Pat English at puzzlnut@telus.net

Canada Day ~ July 1st Sail Past

The July 1st Sail Past is approaching soon. Decorate your boats with some Canadian spirit and come enjoy an afternoon on the water, sailing/cruising around Penelakut and Thetis.

2pm: Depart from Thetis Island Marina/Telegraph Harbour area
1st Pitstop: Tent Island
2nd Pitstop: Penelakut Spit

Cruise continues up the east side of Thetis, around North Cove and down the west side. Let’s keep this fun island tradition alive and celebrate this fine country we call home!
All ages and boats welcome.

I am aware of the multitude of lovely boats on Thetis, so let’s see them on July 1st!

Don Hunter has kindly offered his beach as a place for folks to gather following the Sail Past. Bring your own food, and beverages to enjoy on the beach.

Any questions/info - please contact Tricia Hunter 250-246-8954
