Reminder: March 13th, 1-3pm Advanced Care Planning

On March 13th (after Soups On) Marcela from Island Health will be coming to Thetis Island to host a session on Advanced Care Planning.

·      The difference between Power of Attorney (POA) and Health Care Representation.

·      The difference between an Enduring POA and one that is not designated as such.

·      The difference between Health Care Representation Agreements under Section 7 (RA7) and Section 9 (RA9) of the Health Care Representation Agreement Act.

·      The difference between Health Care Representation Agreements and what used to be known as a Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNR), and what is now known as the Medical Orders Scope of Treatment (MOST).

·      Basic Wills and the difference between designating an executor and a POA.

·      Which professionals are needed for what.

·      What people need in their circumstances and why.

·      What happens if they haven’t done some or all of the above and something happens.

Please put this on your calendar, it is something that we all need to listen and learn about.

Bat Friendly Reminder :- Keep Watch for Bats in the Woodpile

If you are like me, you are getting down to the last couple of rows in your woodshed for this year. The stack of nicely split wood that you put undercover last year is a very attractive hibernation location for some of our local bats. They can crawl a long way in through those crevices towards the rear few rows where a nice, cool, stable temperature regime exists, perfect for a hibernating bat.

You come along to take an armload back to the house for that evening fire, it’s dusk and a bit difficult to see. Pulling out that last piece, Oh my! A Bat! He is moving very slowly, is he hurt? What should I do?

Likely he is not hurt but, he is hibernating. The heart rate of a hibernating bat is about 10 beats per minute and only 1 breath per hour, whereas to fly, his heartrate needs to increase to 1000 beats per minute. This is why he is slowly crawling and not flying.

The best you can do is, wearing thick gloves, move him on a piece of firewood to another location in your woodshed that you won’t be using this year. This way your bat can crawl back into a crevice that won’t be disturbed again this season. When it warms up and insects start flying your bat will leave the woodshed joining others in the bat community and roosting elsewhere for the summer season.

And of course, “anything bat” you can call or email me,

Dogs

Good morning!

Dear neighbors,

A German shepherd has been loose, when I first saw him, he seemed to be lost on Pilkey Point Road and now I have seen him nearby in the forest off the end of Klahowya Road.

Please be careful with your pets and do not let them go out unaccompanied and preferably on a leash.

The CVRD has rules for the care of dogs and the neighbors of dogs.
Problem dogs can be reported. Find a link to the bylaw on:
https://www.cvrd.ca/2751/Dogs

I appreciate your understanding,

Marcia Aftimus

Thanks for Joining us at Power’s Out Day at Forbes Hall!

More than 70 Thetis Islanders dropped by for a warm cup of something, a visit with friends (old and new!), to settle down with a book in our cozy library, or to do some group puzzling! The hall had a great vibe and reminded us of how fortunate we are to live in this community.

Thanks also, to the treat bakers, the volunteers, the dishwashers, and the gifter of flowers.

For those who asked for the soup recipe, see below.

Nice, too, that the power came back on earlier than scheduled!

ThINC - Nature Stewards Program Community Info Session - Saturday, March 23rd

Are you curious about the Native Habitat Stewards signs you've seen going up around the island? Are you interested in boosting biodiversity on your property? Come out to ThINC's Nature Stewards Info Session on Saturday, March 23rd from 1:30 to 3:30 at Forbes Hall to learn how you can restore, enhance, and/or protect the ecosystem on the property you call home. Participating in the Nature Stewards program is fun, easy, and free (donations always welcome). Two or three Nature Stewards Guides walk your property with you to learn about your nature-related goals and challenges. We follow up with a comprehensive site report packed with helpful resources. All properties are eligible for a site visit/report - regardless of size!

For questions about the Nature Stewards Program or the info session, please get in touch with Charlotte at
