Reminder of the Improvement District's (TIID) Special General Meeting

The Thetis Island Improvement District (TIID) will hold a Special General Meeting this Saturday August 10th at 10 AM at Forbes Hall Community Centre.

The purpose of the meeting is to obtain formal support from landowners for the recommendation by the Improvement District trustees to proceed with the purchase of the Fort Garry Fire Trucks MXV Front Line Pumper, through the following motion:
To support the recommendation by the Improvement District trustees to proceed with the purchase of the Fort Garry Fire Trucks MXV Front Line Pumper ($599,875) and financing up to $200,000 as outlined in the PowerPoint presentation.

The vote will be by secret ballot...
To be eligible to vote you need to be a Canadian citizen, 18 years or older, a resident of BC for at least 6 months prior to the vote and own land in the Improvement District.

The poll will be open at 9 AM for voter registration only.
The meeting will begin at 10 AM, with a presentation followed by a question and answer period, followed by the vote.

Thetis Island Community Fund: Family Fun Day Saturday, August 17th, 2024

Anticipation is high, and excitement is growing! Be part of this Annual tradition! For kids of all ages: field races, face-painting, water fun, old fashioned games and tasty food! What is not to like!

Weather Forecast: Coastal Fire Centre

Thurs-Fri: A ridge of high pressure offshore and wrapping itself into the NE portion of the province will keep temperatures seasonal or higher for the next couple of days. A steady flow of short-wave trough of low pressure will create thunderstorm activity. Storms are expected Friday afternoon and into the overnight period. Unstable conditions persist through the weekend with storms expected in parts of the Coastal Fire Centre each afternoon/evening.

Sat-Mon: Return to seasonal temperatures. The thermal trough should break down and move out of the fire centre Saturday afternoon, return to a SW flow with some stronger gusts expected both Saturday and Sunday.

Fire Danger Class

We are creeping very close to EXTREME Fire Danger Class. We will continue in HIGH for the next day or two, but we urge you to mow your lawns or do your chainsawing etc. (High Hazard Activities) early in the morning when the humidity is still high. Finish up before noon at the latest to be safe, and always have a hose or water source handy. You must post a two-hour fire watch afterwards, so sit back with a lemonade and sandwich and think about the November rains to come.

Saltwater Intrusion and How to Prevent It.

Overuse of groundwater from our aquifers can cause saltwater intrusion, particularly during prolonged dry spells and particularly on smaller islands like Thetis and wells close to the shoreline. All of the fresh water in our aquifers comes from the precipitation that falls and percolates into the ground in close proximity to where we pump it out. Once an aquifer is contaminated by salt water, it can take (many) years for it to flush the salt out.

Things to do:

Consider a brown lawn as a badge of honour. Replace "thirsty" plants with native and drought tolerant alternatives. Use captured rainwater for all of your landscape wateringIf it's yellow, let it mellow. Create a "culture of conservation" since climate models suggest that our summers are only going to get longer, hotter and drier in the years to come. Fix any leaks, drips or running toilets immediately. A 1 gallon per minute leak can waste 1,440 gallons of fresh water per day. A single hose running full volume can take 300 gallons of water out of your aquifer every hour! And thousands of gallons can be removed in only 12 hours by a single sprinkler.

Green Burial and St. Margaret's Cemetery

A year ago, in September 2023 the Board of St. Margaret’s Cemetery commissioned a group of volunteers to prepare a development plan for the possible creation of a Green Burial section in the cemetery. The committee was comprised of Sharon Maloney, Nan Beals, Mary Des Chene, and Lynn DeCaire with added support from Norm Kasting, Sid Mawson, The Thetis Island Nature Conservancy , Chris Call and Capernwray. Over the winter this committee researched how Green Burial cemeteries operate and reviewed the data with regards to trends today and into the future for the disposition of remains. They visited a couple of operating Green Burial cemeteries on Salt Spring and Denman Islands and spoke directly with the operators. In the spring of this year, they presented their findings to the Board. We are grateful to the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm with which this committee followed the directive. They did an amazing job!

On Sunday August 11 Simone Luckham ( Treasurer) and myself will be present in the Board Room at Forbes Hall during library hours 1 pm ‘til 3 . The final reports and proposals will be available for the community to check out. We are there to answer your questions and to make public the cemetery’s next moves with regard to this project.
