A Plea

I reiterate the message yesterday from Chris that we do not want an aquaculture industry operating in Preedy Harbour. Since the area was made into a Rockfish Preserve 20 years ago there has been a noticeable increase in sea life as many will have noticed; herring, sea lions, orcas, and humpbacks have all been making a recovery in Preedy harbour. An aquaculture enterprise that involves PVC pipe, predator nets, and marker buoys, covering many hectares of sea floor disrupting the local ecosystem , is a bad idea on many levels. Not to mention that all approvals by both Provincial and Federal Regulators were given without any meaningful local input or even notification is cause for concern. As witnessed with the anchorages of tankers surrounding our island, once permission is granted it is virtually impossible to have any meaningful input into what happens after the fact. Also witness what happens when companies go bankrupt or are sold (as seen with orphan oil wells in Alberta) as the companies abandon any responsibility for cleaning up, the taxpayer assumes the cost).

If you care about our local environment, please make your opinion known to the appropriate authorities.

Busy Ferries: Capernwray Harbour

Dear Island Neighbours,

Capernwray Harbour’s 92 students will be departing for their Mid-Term break on Thursday, October 26th on the 12:35pm ferry. Students will return on Monday, October 30th throughout the afternoon with most taking the 4pm sailing from Chemainus. We wanted to make sure the community was aware and informed of how this may affect ferry travel for those days.

Thank you for your kind understanding and please feel free to reach out to our Main Office if you have any questions.

Looking for Help for Diesel Heater installation

I have a diesel heater for my sailboat I’m not very familiar with this kind of stuff. I’m on disability so funds are limited but I couldn’t trade labour or something for the help and installation.

My boat is docked at Thetis Island Resort and Marina on dock H. I’m looking for getting it installed asap as it’s starting to get cold at night and starting to freeze at night as I only have a small plug-in outlet heater.

The sooner the better.
