BC Cancer Society Stamps

Once again I would like to send out a very heartfelt THANKYOU to the many thoughtful people who have taken the time and made the effort to collect USED postage stamps to help provide funding for the BC Cancer Society

I am honestly overwhelmed by the number of donations which Thetis Islanders and others have dropped off at the post boxes to support this very worthy cause.

Important News Regarding Bats in BC: WNS Detected

Hi Thetis Islanders,

The Ministry of Forests announced 2 days ago the first positive id. for the fungus that causes White Nose Syndrome (WNS) in bats. It was detected in a bulk guano sample taken from under a highway bridge in Grand Forks. Bats often roost under highway bridges, possibly because of the overnight retained heat in concrete. Personally, I think it makes sense that WNS has spread north from Washington through similar habitat and an easy migration corridor. It remains to be seen how detrimental this will be to our B.C. bats.

Please take note; WNS in no way can affect humans. It is caused by a fungus that grows on bats roosting together in caves over the winter. It causes their death by disturbing hibernation resulting in the consumption of the bat’s stored fat reserves. These are the bats that may be seen flying in winter trying to hunt for nonexistent insects.

If you have any questions or concerns,

Please contact: Thetis Island Community Bat Program Coordinator

BC Electoral Boundary Commission Final Report

The final report of the BC Electoral Boundary Commission has been released. In the preliminary report Thetis Island was separated from Chemainus which was included in the revised riding of Cowichan. Thetis was instead attached to the northern riding of Ladysmith-Oceanside.

A number of Thetis Island residents made submissions supportive of Thetis being attached to Cowichan. From the report summary it appears our voices were heard:

"We also heard about the ties and shared interests between specific communities throughout the Island, including those between specific Gulf Islands and adjacent communities on the east coast of Vancouver Island."

The final report includes new boundaries and Thetis has been included in the Cowichan riding:

"This riding includes Duncan, Lake Cowichan and North Cowichan, as well as Thetis, Penelakut and Valdez Islands."

I think this was the right choice and I wish to thank fellow Islanders who helped convince the EBC to make this revision.
