ThINC Nature House - Weekend Activities

Saturday, July 8
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Seaquarium Drop-in
Location: The Nature House at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

In preparation for our new residents, we will be giving a demonstration of how the seaquarium works and provide some info on the critters we might find this summer. This will also be a good time to explore the Nature House and its eclectic collection of curios, and the stunning nearby shoreline.

Sunday, July 9

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm S4: ‘Solar Power: A Real Solution to Climate Change? Reality Check’ with Tom Mommsen and Risa Smith (adult)
Location: Forbes Hall

Tom and Risa, directors of the Salish Sea Renewable Energy Coop (SSREC), will be coming to Thetis to speak about solar energy on the Southern Gulf Islands. They’ll be explaining everything you wanted to know about solar – from theory, to relevance, to impact, to practice. Largely as a result of the work of SSREC the Southern Gulf Islands have become a residential solar powerhouse in BC. Learn how Thetis can join the revolution. Tom and Risa’s talk will be followed by a community discussion. Come with your questions. For more information about SSREC check out the website: www.ssrec.org and Facebook www.facebook.com/ssrec.org/

We will also be at the Howling Wolf Market every Saturday between 10am - 2pm. Drop by to learn more about our programs. We will also be selling a few goodies, including our ThINC t-shirts! Look for the blue tent!

Oh No! Concert Reschedule!

Our fabulous performer for the July 8th concert, Danielle, has tested positive for Covid-19 today! And here I was thinking that Covid was a thing of the past. Alas, Danielle and Phil will not be able to perform this Saturday but luckily we have already found another date - August 5th, same time, same place.

For those of you who have reserved your seats, you will remain on the list unless you reach out to me to let me know that the new date no longer works for you, in which case, we will refund you.

We are sorry for the disappointment and any foiled weekend plans. Hopefully the wait will make this evening of song and community gathering all the more sweet.

Tour de Thetis

Come on out for a bike ride on Saturday morning!

We’ll start at the hall at 9 AM and end up back at the hall at 11 AM for some cookies (they won’t be as good as Fred’s cookies, but I’ll try my best).

All fitness levels and bicycle types are welcome - you can do as much or as little of the route as you like.

ThINC Nature House - Today's Activities, Friday, July 7th

10:00 am - 12:00 pm Young Naturalists: Orca Education Day (kids, 8-12)

Location: The Nature House, The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Come learn about the incredible orcas that call these waters home! We will be learning about orca behaviour and echolocation, and exploring what it is like to experience and map the world through sound just like these cetaceans do. We will also talk about some of the threats to the local Southern Resident Killer Whales and ways we can protect them. If we’re lucky, maybe a pod will pass by the Portal!

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Expert Excursions: Agricultural Land Management with Emily McIvor (youth, adults)

Location: The Portal, 254 North Cove Road

Join local farmer and landscape designer, Emily McIvor for a talk about ecological land management and farming. She asks: ‘what does this land need to heal and decolonize?’ and ‘what is possible to create within given means?’ This talk will include a walk and discussion of invasive species management, storm-water management, and sustainable, land-based industrial activities.

Please see our website: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org for our July calendar of events and for details on upcoming activities.

Very Scared Kitty

Very scared kitty wandering north from Harbour Road, wouldn't come near us. If you're missing one, it has a dark colour with stripes and wearing a blue collar. Not sure where it will end up, but you have the general area to start looking for it.

Coastal Fire Centre Weather Forecast for this Weekend

Weather Forecast

Outlook: Saturday to Monday:

For the weekend the warm, unstable convective pattern will continue as an upper trough persists just west of the Coast. Isolated, wet-ish afternoon thundershowers will continue over the higher terrain of Vancouver Island and the Mainland. Highs will be in the low 30s over the inland mainland and upper 20s over Vancouver Island. Winds will be light SW inflow; afternoon Relative Humidity in the 20s over the Mainland valleys and 30s and 40s over Vancouver Island.

Monday should see a change as the trough is forecast to swing across Vancouver Island late in the day. This could produce more organized showers/wet thundershowers especially over the upper reaches of the inland mainland zones. Temperatures should cool to the mid to upper 20s and RHs will trend upwards.
