Moth Multitudes

Those large numbers of moths you are seeing these days are the Western Hemlock Looper Moth.  They are endemic to BC and numbers rise periodically (approx. 10-30year cycles).

They normally attack western hemlock but if not available, will use Douglas fir and cedar.

They won’t eat your clothes or grains.

Fortunately, bats and dragonflies eat moths.

ThINC Thetis Island Food Mosaic

Good weekend Islanders,

The first iteration of the Thetis Island Food Mosaic is now publicly active!  Please take a tour through the page and feel free to give us feedback (in person, on Facebook, or by email).  The formatting for the phone still needs work, so please use a computer when viewing.

Over the next two months the ThINCpod will be adding more producers and distributors to the map, as well as sites/facilities for Food Education (e.g. processing and gardening workshops, talks, etc).  We also plan to include a number of resources to the Food Mosaic, including a page describing the edible plants of Thetis Island; a plant hardiness zone guide for TI; and a how-to on composting.  Lastly, if you are interested in participating as one of our Food Security Champions, please send us a short write-up (~200 words) describing what you are doing to be more food secure, why it is important to you, and a photo of your garden/farm!

Food Mosaic: https://thetisislandnc.wixsite.com/thinc/food-mosaic-test

Thank you!
