Quarterly Reminder & Call for Notes

Just a reminder that the Quarterly deadline of August 10th is coming up.

If you haven't let us know yet that something is coming, please do!

Also, we are considering a column of notes about how the pandemic has impacted people's lives on Thetis (or not), directly or indirectly. People will look back at this time and be curious about what it was like.  Some quick notes and impressions might make interesting reading.

If something comes to mind, send it along to us at quarterly@thetisisland.net, and thank you!

Need a Pump for a Zodiac

We have a zodiac zoom inflatable dinghy.  We are trying to inflate it and we have a pump that does not seem to be working.  We are not sure if it is the pump or the values on the dinghy that are not working.  Does anyone have a pump for a zodiac that we could try out? I have a picture of the pump that we have if that might be helpful.

Please email Genny Redman at gkredman@gmail.com or call 250-210-3087 if you think you might be able to help us out. Thanks so much!

How the Grinch Stole Fairyslipper

The marker and post for Fairyslipper Forest Nature Reserve trail disappeared Monday, either stolen or removed as a prank.

This is a shock and disappointment to those of us who spent more than four years and hundreds of hours raising more than half a million dollars to purchase the property, saving it from development and making it available for public use; then putting in countless hours of voluntary work building the low-impact trail and arranging for its long-term management by Islands Trust Conservancy. Oddly enough, this happened just two days after a disturbing incident.

While Ann and I were installing one of the posts for a direction sign on the trail Saturday afternoon, a hiker, walking the trail with a well-behaved dog, scuttled past grumbling that we were ruining the forest by putting up signs. Before I could reply, he scooted off down the path. Not a word of appreciation for the purchase or the volunteer work of building the trail; and certainly not a thought for those newcomers or visitors who might find these signs useful. I assume there’s no link between these two incidents other than a lack of regard for community efforts and public property.

If anyone has information about the lost sign and post, please contact us. It would be lovely if the thief or prankster had the decency to return them.

Extreme Hazard

Monday morning is the last day of “early shift” for hazardous activities: Chainsawing, mowing, chipping, blasting, splitting, grinding etc. with gas/diesel powered equipment. You  must shut down at 11:00 a.m. and Post a fire watch for two hours.

After Monday there can be no hazardous activities until three days after we drop from EXTREME to HIGH HAZARD again and early shift activities can resume.  We will post when this occurs.

A reminder to make sure you don’t park your vehicle on tall grass...the catalytic converter is often a culprit of grass fires igniting vehicle fires igniting brush and forest fires.

Info on Red Onion Recall:

In response to the TIFD notice about a recall on red onions, I called Superstore on Sunday because I had purchased some on Friday.  I spoke with the manager and they have taken them all off the shelves because they were from the States.

She said they don’t always keep the info of the brand name or product code but because they were from the States, they were pulled from the shelves.  She advised not to eat them and the store would refund anyone if they had purchased them next time they are in.  Hope this saves a few other phone calls.
