Will Hand Sanitizer Cause a Fire in Your Vehicle?

There has been a lot of misinformation sharing on social media lately concerning hand sanitizer bursting into flames when kept in a hot vehicle this summer.  This unfortunate media muddle is the result of an American news outlet that didn’t quite understand fire chemistry.

The NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) explains it this way:
While it's true that most hand sanitizers have a flashpoint around room temperature, that doesn't mean the liquid will all of a sudden catch fire if it reaches that temperature. Flashpoint is a technical term used to characterize the propensity of a liquid to burn. It defines the temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to become ignitible in the air. At that temperature, however, you still need an ignition source like a flame from a candle or a lighter for ignition to occur.

The photo of a car interior door area burned has been widely circulated.  It originates from Brazil and it was hand sanitizer, but only after a car fire had ignited it. So, don’t worry about leaving your hand sanitizer in your hot vehicle.  It will not burst into flames on its own.  Keep using it when you go to town on sunny days.

In a Time of Need

I, Poppa Gall, as referred to by my grandkids, am truly privileged to live amongst such great neighbours and friends. I think our youngest granddaughter, Kiersley, said it best Wednesday night while her older sister, Jayleigh, was being so well attended to after her accident with her bicycle during their ride home from a visit to Gramma and Poppa's. "Look at how many people have come to help and care for Jayleigh! Aren't we blessed to have such nice neighbours mommy?"

A trip to Duncan for some stitches and Jayleigh is home to mend.

Poppa wants to offer a Thunderous Round of Applause to all of you who jumped in to help.

We indeed are blessed beyond what we deserve to live amongst such caring friends.

Again many thanks

From Poppa

Housing Needed for ThINC Summer Student

ThINC is pleased to let you know that we have hired Connor McRae-Pharo, a 25-yr-old Geography student in his graduating year at UVic, to be part of a local team working on our exciting new food security initiative. But he needs a place to live!

If anyone has a camper, trailer, cabin, or house-sit available from June 1 to the end of August, please contact Connor directly at mcraehpharoc@gmail.com or 250-686-9936.

He’s happy to pay a modest rent or trade for yard or other work. He has been self-isolating in Victoria for several weeks and ThINC will have COVID-19 measures in place during the period of employment.

Thank you from the ThINC board

ThINC Summer Plans

Dear Thetis Island community:  We hope you are well, and would like to take this time to update you on our summer plans.  In light of the continuing COVID-19 situation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Nature House program for the summer season.  However that doesn’t mean we will cancel all ThINC activities!  The pandemic has highlighted the parts of our society that need attention, one of which is food security. As you are well aware, this is even more of an issue for a small island like Thetis, particularly for seniors.

Thankfully, we have a strong community of islanders who look out for each other, and a growing Food Co-op that is helping address our food security gaps by producing local organically grown food and providing food delivery services. To aid in this effort, ThINC, with the support of the Canada Summer Jobs program, TIRRA and the Community Fund, is pivoting its activities this summer towards addressing island food security, which is one of our organization’s mandates.

We are hiring two university students to help with operations at Jollity and engage in other local projects such as tending to a pollinator garden, managing invasive species, trail maintenance, helping to establish a medicinal garden, and creating an educational food map of the island which will be available to the community at summer’s end.

There may be opportunities throughout the summer for the community to engage and collaborate on these initiatives, depending on changing COVID-19 protocols.

For those who have purchased a “Friends of the Nature House” membership for 2020, we are grateful for your support and will apply your membership to the 2021 season.

We’ll have more information to share with you as our plans develop.

Thank you all from the ThINC board. Stay well.
