Notice: Changes to Rte 20 Schedule Effective January 1, 2019

Beginning January 1, 2019, our ferry, MV Kuper, will have two changes to its sailing schedule:

 1) The returning Dangerous Cargo, leaving Thetis every 2nd Thursday, is moved to 1:10. This change ensures our mail gets across everyday and opens up the 2:40 sailing for passengers and vehicles.

 2) Friday sailings start 15 minutes earlier (6:00 am from Thetis) and finish 5 minutes later to run closer to new adjusted schedule. No one expects this to be a magic fix but hoping for an overall improvement in on time performance.

Saltair Traffic Delays

Traffic Delays (Saltair) on Chemainus Rd and Old Victoria Rd going north from Chemainus

Starting this coming week there will most likely be traffic delays while work is being done on the Saltair Water System distribution system on Chemainus Rd from Reed Rd to Olsen Rd and on Old Victoria Rd from the Chemainus boundary towards Jackman Rd.

It might be faster to take Henry road when travelling north.

Please remember to plan extra travel time while this work is being done.

Saltair is working on our yearly aging water system upgrades. Thank you for your patients.

Regards,

Lynne Smith

Christmas Concert - a few more helpers needed to make this work !

Less than two weeks until the Christmas Concert. Things are coming along, but I need some help. Do you feel like like...

- bringing some goodies (sweet or savory)?

- helping out in the kitchen by setting up the coffee/tea/juice cart, or bringing things out at the intermission, or stay afterwards to help clean up ?

- leading the carol sing- along ?     Please contact me 250 - 246- 4802   or email simone@stonesculptor.ca

The program so far includes (in no particular order and subject to change) : the Elementary school students, Dona Nobis Pacem* Singers , Ken Redman and his ukulele group, Mary Forbes and friends, Maureen and Wayne Loiselle, Joel Delaquis,  and after the intermission Michelle Boehringer.  Ron Vandergaag has kindly offered to play the piano for the concert.

* The plan is to include the whole audience in this beautiful round. You are welcome to join our practice on Tuesday 4th December, at 3 pm at 101 Hollyberry lane.

See you all on Thursday, 13th December at 7 pm

Discussion Group?

Folk-singer Valdi, on Saltspring, once described an island as differences of opinion surrounded by water. It’s a lovely phrase, and one that inspired me to think about what’s been going on during the decade Ann and I have lived on Thetis.

Our special place, it seems, is a good example of how islands also have a way of challenging and moderating the impact of those differing opinions in order to make positive things happen.

Witness plans for the new community centre; the raising of money and support to purchase land on Burchell Hill and Moore Hill for the purpose of conservation; and the transformation of the former Camp Columbia into The Portal, a major shift from private real estate mentality to a project whose aims include public use for sustainability and learning. If you add to these achievements the various voluntary trails being established on private land, it’s clear that Thetis, which previously had no public land, is well on the way to becoming a prime example of community effort and generosity.

It was with these very positive ideas in mind that I listened to Jean Ensminger’s thoughts again this week about having some regular meetings to discuss issues large and small and how we as individuals and as a community can try to understand them at a deeper level.

The hope, obviously, is that this deeper understanding might contribute to change. I was pleasantly surprised by Jean’s comment, as I’d heard others, including Suzanne Sarioglu and Maureen Loiselle, speak in the past of having what some call a philosopher’s café, a low-key public think-tank, where we develop the skills of listening and sharing with our knowledgeable and inquiring friends and neighbours.

If you’re interested in participating in a small discussion group to explore ideas and concerns, why not drop an email to me or Jean and perhaps we can find a time for an initial meeting.

Baby Shower for Britt & Adam ~ December 1st ~ 3PM

On December 1 at 3pm, Sandy Hirtz & Kia are hosting a couples baby shower for Britt & Adam.

Would love for you to join us if you can.

Anything you want would be perfect.  They have little other than the bringing baby home basics.

Please spread the work to those you think would appreciate an invite.  I know little of Britt's friends, males are invited, too.

Britt & Adam are decorating the baby's room with a forest animal theme.  So the shower will have the same theme to welcome the wee, wild one.  Instead of a card, if possible, bring a book for the baby with a message inside.
