Home Cooking Stats

Here are the latest North American statistics for residential fires:

Between  2012-2016, there was an average of about 470 home cooking fires per day. These fires caused an average of 530 civilian deaths, 5,270 reported civilian fire injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage per year.

Unattended cooking was the leading cause of cooking fires and casualties. Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1 percent of these fires, but clothing ignitions led to 15 percent of the home cooking fire deaths.

Home fires caused by cooking peaked at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Ranges or cooktops were involved in the 63 percent of reported home cooking fires, 86 percent of cooking fire deaths, and 79 percent of cooking fire injuries.

Households that use electric ranges have a higher risk of cooking fires and associated losses than those using gas ranges.

One-third of the people killed by cooking fires were sleeping at the time. More than half of the non-fatal injuries occurred when people tried to control the fire themselves.

If you are building a new home, consider fire sprinklers.  They are extremely effective in stopping kitchen fires.  Other new technologies are also available.

Call the TIVFD Duty Officer 252-0228 for information.

Christmas Concert Info

Just a reminder that the Thetis Island Christmas Concert is this Thursday, December 13th at 7pm.

As ever, big thanks go to Simone for making this magical concert happen every year.  After all the performances and sing-alongs there will be an intermission with cookies and cake, a chance to mingle and chat.  After the intermission will come my story poem.  For those of you who aren't in the mood for a long story poem, don't feel the least bit guilty about leaving at the end of the intermission and skipping it.

This feel-good story poem is 20 minutes long and is called "The Cats of the Winter Palace". It takes place at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1745.  Inspired by true events of history (with some embellishment), it tells the story of the birth of the city, a powerful woman, an ambitious girl and how cats from the ancient Muslim city of Kazan came to take up residence in the Winter Palace and have been there ever since.  For those of you who are animal lovers you will be interested to know that this cat colony has evolved into a famous cat rescue charity that still operates out of the cellars of the Winter Palace.

By the way, Natasha has already heard this poem and given it enthusiastic approval - this is Russian history and culture with a happy ending.  I hope you will enjoy it!

Bring Fibre Optic Cable to ALL of Thetis

Ideally, EVERYONE should fill out this form and send it in.

The Fire Department is working to get better phone/internet lines to the fire hall but if everyone complains, we all have a chance at a better service.

Thetis Island Local Trust Committee Meeting ~ Tuesday

The first meeting of the new Thetis Island Local Trust Committee is this Tuesday at 9:30

We have booked the main hall for this event and hope that you will join us.

Many of you spoke to Doug and I during the election about access to your local government and local issues.

All of our meetings our open to the public and a "Town Hall" is scheduled near the beginning of every meeting.

This is a great opportunity for us to hear what you would like this LTC to prioritize this term and what work it has to carry on from the last term.

So come on out, meet the LTC and the Islands Trust staff.  This will be the first time on Island for our new chair, Laura Patrick from Saltspring Island.

I know that she would be pleased to meet as many islanders as she can and get a sense of our community.

You can find the meeting agenda by clicking on the calendar icon at this link : http://www.islandstrust.bc.ca/islands/local-trust-areas/thetis/

I look forward to working with Doug and Laura this term and I hope you will join us on Tuesday even if only for the town hall and to welcome our new chair, Laura Patrick.

I will bring some goodies and eggnog ;)

Peter Luckham, Chair Trust Council

Trustee, Thetis Island
