THETIS ISLAND COMMUNITY 4H CLUB

After a couple false starts we are ready to start up a community 4-H club here on the island for our children and youth.

For those who don't know, 4-H is a youth development program sponsored in part by the Ministry of Agriculture.  Their motto is "learn by doing" and the '4-H' stands for their pledge:

- My HEAD to clearer thinking,

- My HEART to greater loyalty,

- My HANDS to larger service,

- My HEALTH to better living,

- For my Club, my Community and My Country.

Check out more details here https://www.bc4h.bc.ca/projects/clubs

I’ve completed the 4-H Leadership training and we think we have enough members to get started!  You don’t need to have a farm to join, there are lots of opportunities for smaller projects and kids can lease animals as well. Children must be at least five years old to be members.

A representative from 4H BC is willing to come down to Thetis on Thursday September 19th. Please let me know if you’re interested in learning more or attending the information session.

Call or text 250-416-9771 to get more details

Hazard Rating Drops to High

The Fire Hazard Rating drops to HIGH Hazard on Thursday.  This means that “early shift” high Hazard Activities can once again commence...chainsawing, excavating, lawn mowing etc.  Be aware that HIGH is still a significant fire hazard and we are not out of the woods yet, so to speak.  Watch your sparks and ignition points.

No open fires (other than propane campfires).  Make sure your chimney has been cleaned before you light your inside wood stoves and your sparks grate is in place.

Salt Spring Station is still reporting at EXTREME so we are at the high end of HIGH hazard for wildfire conditions.  Please be careful.

Yoga Classes - Waitlist and Second Class

Yoga starts Monday, September 16.

The 5:45 pm class is full and there is a waitlist.

I am contemplating running 2 classes on Mondays, with an earlier class from 4:30 to 5:30 pm class so as to accommodate those on the wait list.

If this would be of interest to you please email me and state which class time you would prefer to attend so that I can assess whether or not to hold the extra class.

Hoping this makes sense :)

Quick Reminder about EXTREME

We are still in EXTREME Fire Hazard here, as are the Salt Spring, Cedar, and North Cowichan reporting stations.  The fire weather forecast is for rain Sunday night or Monday and if that rain actually hits the ground here for three days we will drop to HIGH Hazard and early shift activities can start again.  We will post here on on the TIVFD website when HIGH RISK ACTIVITIES can begin again.

In the meantime, September is traditionally a bad month for fires because people enjoy the cooler evenings, the dew in the mornings, and even the morning fog and become complacent with fire.  But the woods are now at their driest and ponds and wells are low.  We all appreciate your vigilance and patience.  Soon enough we will be in Moderate and then Low and then snow!
