St. Margaret's Cemetery

There has been some tree cutting taking place at St.Margarets Cemetery.

It has become clear this spring that many of the cedars in the cemetery were dead or dying. The effects of hotter drier summers and the powder post beetle are taking their toll on cedars throughout the Southern Vancouver Island area. A decision was made to take then down before we continue with development of the new green cemetery and other remediation work being done on the bank and within the old cemetery.

It should also be made known that sadly, the large stand of old cedars right at the entrance to the cemetery are dying. These too will be brought down. All of these measures open new opportunities for things like green burials and reforesting.

It is also in the long term interest of the cemetery. I am interested to hear from anyone who is familiar with making split cedar rails for fencing. Call Suzanne 250-246-9965.

It Is Broom Bash Season!

What is broom bash season?   It is the short window where the broom growing everywhere along our roadways is in bloom but has not yet set seed.  Experts acknowledge this as the best time to eliminate the unwanted species.

Call to action...grab your loppers when you go for a walk and chop down any broom you find at ground level.  Meet up with a neighbour and clean out a patch.  I was able to get most of the broom along the hill down to the ferry Thursday morning simply while I was waiting in line.  Grab loppers while you are waiting at the ferry...there is still lots right behind the signs at the top of the hill.  Or at numerous places around the Island.

Lets bash that broom!

Cats & Birds

Note the messages from "Friends of Furries" and the information on the Bird Count

Might cat owners make the connection and keep their cats indoors?

Forgive me but I'd just viewed another facebook-posted photo of a very unfortunate hummingbird after a cat caught it.

Friends of Furries Update

Friends of Furries has been able to assist with the neutering of several male cats this spring, including a couple of very aggressive tom cats that were attacking other cats in their home yards.

We would like to encourage everyone to have their dogs and cats neutered or spayed for the health of both the intact animal as well as other neighbourhood pets. Neutering males decreases aggressive behaviour and wandering, while spaying females eliminates kittens and puppies.

If you need assistance with your pet, Friends of Furries has confidential funds available to assist with veterinary costs and we may be able to assist with logistical support getting your animal to or from a vet for spay/neuter.

Please contact Carol at seaspray@telus.net or Rhonda at davincii@telus.net if we can be of assistance.
