Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department Update

The TIVFD is remaining fully operational at this time and we are following government and health authority guidelines during this pandemic.   

We are taking extra precautions to ensure a lower risk of virus spread to the responders themselves and the community at large.  We continue to respond to medical assist calls and fire incidents.  

TIVFD members just returning from trips away are now self-isolating for two weeks and will not be responding to call-outs. 

We have cancelled the monthly Blood Pressure Clinic.

Forbes Hall Expansion Update

In a recent Notice to members of Thetis Island Community Association, termination was announced of the construction contract with J Lealand Contracting Ltd. This construction contract was for the expansion of Forbes Hall.

On Friday, March 13^th community members Carl Unger, John Gordon, and Ernie Hunter presented a construction proposal to the Forbes Hall Expansion Committee and the TICA executive. 

On Sunday March 15th, Ron Bannister, and some Expansion Committee members, held further discussions regarding the construction proposal that included those mentioned above, and also Peter de Hoot and Michel Poirier.

Unfortunately, a public meeting to share information about the construction project scheduled for Sunday, March 15^th, was postponed due to the Corona virus. 

It was the intention of TICA Directors to seek approval from the TICA membership on March 28th, to engage in a new general contractor. The directors intended to ask members to approve a motion to proceed with a single selection (sole source) process. In an effort to contain costs and minimize delay, the Directors and Expansion Committee do not recommend engaging in another competitive selection tender process.  

It now appears that the March 28^th TICA membership meeting will be cancelled because of the COVID-19 health crisis, and the Provincial Government's decision to prohibit gatherings of over 50 people. 

TICA is exploring different ways that the membership can vote on this motion without holding a meeting. TICA has 336 voting members.

Directors are also considering whether to make decision to go to sole source without a membership vote. Legal advice is being sought is being sought on this option.

All plans for Soup du jour at Heneage House have been cancelled for March. 

We hope to be back in April.

Notice of Upcoming TICA Extraordinary General Meeting

It has come to our attention that some members' emails either did not arrive, or got put into their junk-mail. The notice was sent out Saturday, March 14th, two weeks prior to the upcoming meeting.

To be sure that the Notice of Meeting gets out to as many members as possible, we are sending out a second notice.

Also, due to the measures being taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19, TICA will be creating a vote format that will not involve a heavy concentration of members in an enclosed space.  More information will follow next week regarding place, and format.

In an effort to contain costs and minimize delay, the Directors and Expansion Committee do not recommend

PLEASE RESIST the urge to clean up your gardens until after temperatures are constantly above 10 degrees Celsius, 50 degrees Fahrenheit.  

Many butterflies, bees and other pollinators are currently overwintering in the dead leaves and hollowed out stems of last year's plants.

If you clean out your garden now, you will literally be throwing away this year's butterflies,bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Cancellation of March 19th Thetis Island Residents' and Ratepayers' Association Annual General Meeting

We are mindful that bringing a group of people together is not recommended at this time, due to our requirement to adhere to social distancing. According to health professionals, reducing contact with others is the best way to keep ourselves, our neighbours, our community and our most vulnerable safe.

Thank you to TIVFD for offering the use of the firehall as the venue.

This meeting is hereby cancelled until further notice.

Vet Visit for Large Animals on April 30

We are having the large animal (livestock) vet from Mill Bay Veterinary do a farm call to Thetis on April 30.  

He is currently scheduled to see a few horses for routine vaccinations and dental checks, but can do more if anyone else needs something done for their livestock.

Brooding Equipment

We are adopting 6 girls (chickens), and will be needing some equipment.

We have a infrared heat bulb but wondering if anyone has a lamp fixture that we could borrow or rent or buy for a few weeks starting mid April.

Not sure if there is anything else we would need but all suggestions are welcome. We are new at this.

TIVFD: COVID-19

This is an excerpt from a letter to First Responder departments today from Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer.  

The TIVFD asks that you follow these simple precautions:

The focus in BC continues to be to contain the spread of COVID-19 in our communities and at a provincial level. As you know, the majority of people who become infected with COVID-19 will experience a mild illness that will not require medical care, but those who are vulnerable to the disease—those who are elderly or who have underlying conditions that compromise the immune system—are at risk for severe illness.

To ensure we are able to provide patient care, especially to those most vulnerable, and to make sure that our health system and our health-care providers are able to care for those who become severely ill, we are asking people to self-monitor their health and to apply a low threshold when feeling unwell to stay home until they are better.
