Can I Burn Outdoors Today?

Answer: Check the Ventilation Index
The daily Smoke Control Forecast contains predictions of the Ventilation Index, a measure of atmospheric turbulence and low level winds, for 25 B.C. locations.
Thetis Island is in the Southern Vancouver Island (SRN VAN ISLD) ventilation index zone.
The burning of woody debris outdoors is only permitted when the forecast Ventilation Index is sufficient to disperse smoke. Before debris can be ignited, the Ventilation Index must be predicted to be both GOOD (55-100) this afternoon as well as FAIR or GOOD (34-100) tomorrow afternoon. Additional rules on outdoor burning are in the Ministry of Environment Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation.
Google "ventilation Index", or phone 1-888-281-2992 for daily update. This Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation is Provincial and additional and separate from Regional or local Burning bylaws. Outdoor Burning of woody forest debris on Thetis Island does not require a permit from November 1 to April 1 but you must follow Provincial regulations for size and location of your burn pile as well as outlined safety measures. The Smoke Control Regulation applies Year-round and regulated by the Ministry of Environment for the health of all British Columbians.
