Smoke Warning for Southern Vancouver Island

Issued: September 11th, 2020 at 16:30 PDT

Timing:

·          Friday September 11th to Monday September 14th

Key Points:

·        Smoke primarily originating from the western United States will persist for the South Coast and spread to the Southern Interior this weekend, and possibly the Central Interior

·        The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is expected to be frequently 10+

·        The concerning component is fine particulate matter from smoke.

·       Some people are at higher risk of health effects from wildfire smoke, including those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, or acute respiratory infections such as COVID-19. Pregnant women, infants, young children, and older adults may also be more affected.

·       During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly and concentrations can vary considerably hour by hour.

·        Outlook: Conditions may improve on the coast starting early next week. However, there may be other smoke events in the coming weeks.

ACTION:  Reduce or limit outdoor activity during smoky periods.  Children, the elderly and respitory-compromised  persons should stay indoors if possible.  Limit strenuous activity.  If you experience coughing or throat irritation, cease your activity and stay indoors.

Thetis AIR QUALITY STATION: Go to www2.purpleair.com for the air quality readings from the station at the Thetis Island school.  They are updated every 10 minutes and although are only reading air from that location, you can get a good idea of the air quality around the island. (Green is good, purple is very bad).

You can also get an idea of where the smoke is coming from and going to by checking the map at www.firesmoke.ca.
