Nature of Forest Weekend, July 18 & 19
Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 10:50AM Our trees are a key part of the natural beauty that makes Thetis Island special. To help us learn more about our forests Community Climate Resilience and Thetis Island Nature Conservancy (with support from the Thetis Island Community Fund) are presenting a Nature of Forest Weekend on July 18th and 19th.
July 18
On Saturday morning, Mitch Sherrin, retired Captain with Salt Spring Island Fire and Rescue, will lead a field workshop "FireSmart Through an Ecological Lens".
On Saturday afternoon, Dr. Andy MacKinnon, a leading forest ecologist who has extensively studied the relationship between trees and ectomycorrhizal fungal species, will host a field workshop, "Plants and Their Fungal Friends".
July 19
On Sunday morning Cheyenne Williams and Sarah Jackman from Quw'utsun' Cultural Connections Society will lead a discussion on the role of indigenous knowledge in our understanding of forest ecology.
On Sunday afternoon, paleontologist and botanist Dr. Richard Hebda will give a talk, "Forests of the Gulf Islands: Past, Present, and Future". Dr. Hebda is a leading authority on the origins and history of our climate systems, as well as the effects of climate change.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon we will host a panel to further discuss the many forest issues.
