Terry Martin Islands Trust Candidate Statement

My name is Terry Martin, and I am running for Islands Trust. My life experiences give me the ability to understand many different points of view, which gives me the balanced perspective to represent all Thetis Islanders.

I've been a renter. I've been a landlord.

I've been an employee, and owned businesses with employees.

As a private individual I have dealt with the municipal planning department, and I have been the Chair of the Vancouver Board of Variance at City Hall for 4 years. This experience has given me in depth knowledge and experience with bylaws and planning departments.

I grew up with a single parent on welfare and have been financially successful.

I've worked in social services as a front-line worker nine years in the field of mental health, advocating for people in the mental healthcare system.

I've worked with and ran for public office with Neighbourhoods For A Sustainable Vancouver.

I've been an advocate for affordable housing and having had the financial means, I showed my commitment by fully funding, for the last ten years, a two-unit house for people transitioning out of a homeless shelter program.

My wife and I spent many years visiting the gulf islands. We appreciate and value their rural nature. Our hope was to one day live on one. Between Leech Island and Thetis Island, that dream has come true since 2015.

I see this opportunity not as one to serve my own opinions, but as one to represent the opinions and desires of the people of Thetis Island. Please consider voting for Terry Martin for your Islands Trust representative.
