Marge Armstrong has asked me to convey to our community the very sad news of the passing of Harry Armstrong on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 07:30 a.m. in the Cowichan District Hospital, Duncan BC, with Marge and his family around him.
Marge and Harry moved to Thetis Island in July of 1979 after Harry had served for thirty years in the Vancouver Fire Dept. Even though he was very busy building their house near Pilkey Point, two months later Pete Rees had convinced Harry to join the TIRA Fire Brigade and between the two retired Vancouver fire captains, they built what is now known as your TIVFD.
Harry served as Deputy Chief of the TIVFD for twenty-three more years until his second retirement from the Fire Service in 2003. After his well deserved retirement was announced, Harry and Marge continued to support the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Dept. as mentors, and they never missed a TIVFD summer picnic nor the November TIVFD Appreciation Dinners.
Marge and family are planning a Thetis Island “Celebration of Life” to honour Harry’s memory with the TIVFD, friends and neighbours, sometime in November. As details are firmed up, there will be a community notice posted on eSpokes and the Thetis Blog.
Marge will be staying in the Lower Mainland with son Brent and family for the next several weeks, and you may direct mail to her c/o Brent Armstrong, 2674 Klassen Court, Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 5Y8.

Hello islanders,
Saffron's pet rooster came with a friend, but we only need one. Both are purebred, friendly and quiet for roosters. One is black and white splash, the other one is buff/red. Saffron loves them both but has decided she needs to give one away - so if you are interested let us know and you can take your pick. At the very least they are cool to look at :)

A number of people have asked how they can help with the Open House at the former Camp Columbia on Oct 9th.
A donation of cookies is most welcome. Please bring your baking to Heneage House at 1PM on the 9th or call Vicky Walker at 250-246-9126 to arrange an alternate drop off.
We are also arranging a shuttle from the 1:10 ferry and back to the 4:30 ferry. If you can offer to drive or need a ride, please contact Simone Luckham at 250-246-4802 or email her at simone@stonesculptor.ca .
Many thanks. We hope to see you there.
The Steering Committee
Since April 1st of this year we have been enjoying a 5% reduction in our ferry fares (which will continue indefinitely). This was given to Route 20 because the community driven schedule saved BC Ferries $100,000 annually above and beyond what the Province mandated. The savings that were achieved with the new schedule in the previous two fiscal years were discussed with BC Ferries representatives and the FAC on Friday September 23rd.
We are pleased to announce that BC Ferries will pay Thetis and Penelakut Islands $100,000 each to be directed towards a community investment. The FAC has concluded that the money will be used for an expansion of Forbes Hall. The FAC felt that the Hall positively impacts the largest number of Islanders on a yearly basis.
I would like to sincerely thank Bill Dickie and Dave Knowles who got this whole thing started and members of the FAC who have worked on this initiative since early 2012. Thanks also to BC Ferries for honouring their commitment to return additional savings to our communities.
