Camp Columbia Property Open House

This Sunday Oct.9, 1:00-3:30 (come when it suits you!)

This event is designed to be very open and fluid~ an opportunity to engage in conversation around the potential for this beautiful property, as well as explore the grounds. However, at 2:00 pm there will be a scheduled time for the Porter family to share their story and vision for the property, as well as for anyone else who might wish to share memories, thoughts, and ideas with the whole group. So you may want to plan your attendance around that.

Also, if you are not able to attend the event, or you wish to take more time in formulating any input or feedback, please feel free to submit your thoughts in writing by Oct.31 either by email: thinc@thetisisland.net;  or by mail/drop box to PO Box 18-2, Thetis Island, BC V0R 2Y0.

With Thanks,

Public Letter of Thanks

October 2, 2016

Public Letter of Thanks to the Ferry Advisory Committee & Others

The boards of both the Thetis Island Community Association and the Community Fund sincerely thank Keith Rush, Steve Frankel, Arthur Hunter, Sue French, Ken Hunter, David Knowles and Bill Dickie for dedicating hours of research and work into the re-working our Ferry Schedule.  This work resulted in a schedule that not only works well for islanders, but also went above and beyond what was mandated by the BC Government.

It is because of these additional savings that we have a 5% reduction in our fares. Additionally, our island (Penelakut as well), have each received a truly surprising investment in our community by BC Ferries, of $100,000.  This money is in recognition of what was owed to the communities for the previous two years.

The Community Fund and the Community Association will honour this gift, and see that it is used to its fullest potential for expanding our well-used and much-loved Forbes Hall.

Shake Out

It should never be out of the back of our minds that The Big One will happen and we should be prepared.

This year, the Great Canadian Shake Out earthquake preparedness drill occurs on October 20th, at 10:20 a.m.  That’s the time when British Columbian’s should practice what to do when an earthquake hits.

For more information, visit www.shakeoutbc.ca and register yourself for participation.  There are lots of resources on that website to help you prepare.  Local radio stations will be broadcasting the sounds of an earthquake at 10:20 on the Thursday, Oct. 20th, to simulate what you will hear when it really happens.

Join in and drill!  Drop, Cover and Hang On!

Samsung Washing Machine Issue

We saw in the paper that there’s a serious possible problem with the Samsung top loading washing machines manufactured between 2011 and 2016.  We checked our model number against the list of affected models and ours is one of them.

If you have a Samsung top loading washing machine, follow the link to see if you need to report your washing machine.  https://pages.samsung.com/ca/toploadwasherremedy/English/index.jsp?.  There’s also a CBC link with information about this issue - http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/samsung-washing-machine-explode-1.3783613
