The Thetis Island Nature Conservancy invites you to attend three community events about bees, eelgrass and owls offered during our Nature Day Camp next week.
Monday, July 6 at 7 p.m. at Forbes Hall. Come and hear biologist Ted Leischner from Plan Bee Now (www.planbeenow.ca) talk about native bees and pollinators and what we can all do to protect them and our food security.
Wed. July 8 from 8:30a.m. to noon. Meet at Pilkey Pt with your own canoe or kayak.
Come and join our campers as we paddle Cufra Inlet with eelgrass specialist Nikki Wright from Seachange Conservation Society (seachangesociety.com) to learn about the ecological importance of eelgrass beds. Bring your own personal powered watercraft (canoe or kayak), paddles and lifejackets, and a lunch for a picnic on Pilkey Pt following the paddle. Did you know Thetis Island has some of the richest eelgrass beds in the Gulf Islands?
Friday, July 10 at 7 pm at Forbes Hall. Biologist Tania Tripp will fascinate us all with a slide show and talk about native owls. After the talk Tania will take us on a dusk walk in the woods to try and call in owls. Bring a flashlight for the return journey.
We're excited about the camp and the opportunity to share these three great resource people with the community. We hope to see you there.

The Provincial Fire Ban area has now expanded to include North Vancouver Island.
The Coastal Fire Centre is expanding its campfire ban due to continued hot and dry conditions, and because there is no precipitation in the weather forecast. The public's assistance is requested to help reduce the number of human-caused fires and to enable crews to respond to naturally occurring wildfires.
This prohibition does not apply to CSA-rated or ULC-rated cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus that uses briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. The Coastal Fire Centre previously allowed the use of briquettes in established campfire rings in campgrounds, but as of noon on Thursday, briquettes may be used only in ULC-approved or CSA-approved devices, due to the extreme fire danger.
Thetis Island continues to ban all BBQs and outdoor stoves other than ULC or CSA approved propane or briquette devices in line with the Provincial ban. Dispose of briquettes by placing the ash and debris in a metal container, cover with water, and leave for at least 48 hours. Charcoal briquettes are made of scrap wood and sawdust and will hold heat and embers for a very long time.

As many of you know, we (Ken and Genny Redman) are building this year. The building project is not moving along like we thought! So we are looking for a place on Thetis Island to house sit or rent for October, November and possibly December.
We have excellent references and would take care of your home as if it were our own.
You can contact us at 250-246-2465.
Thanks
Genny
This week only, our Friday evening ping-pong session will be on Thursday afternoon 4:30 - 6:30.

Please note that we will be leaving the dock at 1:30PM instead of 11AM as previously posted, so more people can join in.
