Glass Can Start Fires

A reminder to remove all glass or plastic garden décor that could transmit or concentrate sunlight into a heat source and possibly cause a fire.  Things such as glass globes, Japanese fishing floats, vases etc should be moved into deep shade for as long as fire danger persists.  Pick up any scraps of broken glass you might encounter on your walks for the same reason.

Emergency Social Services Notice to Thetis Islanders

ATTENTION Thetis Island: There is an extreme risk of wild fires! We have never before experienced such hot dry weather this early, and summer has barely begun.

PLEASE: Avoid all risk taking, avoid any activity that might spark a wild fire, no matter what it is! A spark is enough to burn acres.

REMEMBER: To have your Grab-n-go bag handy

HELP: Keep our Island people and homes and property safe from wild fires!!!

Take care, Mary Forbes, TI ESS

Fire Hazard Readiness ~ How BC Ferries would respond

The following information has been provided by BC Ferries’ Marine Superintendent Lewis MacKay as guidance on the protocols to be followed by BC Ferries in the event of a major fire or incident on Thetis Island.

BC Ferries’ default position is to maintain the normal ferry schedule unless they are instructed by Emergency Services to do otherwise. The normal schedule is already known to all of the emergency services and to most island residents.

BC Ferries’ Operations Centre in Victoria is staffed 24/7 and is their primary point of contact for all emergency authorities. From there, BC Ferries has the ability to mobilise resources to support needs of the emergency services, though it should be recognised that like most organisations, BC Ferries’ resource levels are at their lowest overnight, when crew members may need to be mobilised unexpectedly. In emergency situations, BC Ferries aims to provide an effective response within the resources they have available to them.

In the event of a major incident, BC Ferries would likely receive direction from Emergency Management BC (EMBC) that a local state of emergency was being declared and EMBC would issue direction to BC Ferries to work with local officials on how to prioritize service.  In those circumstances BC Ferries would follow the direction of the emergency authorities, and those authorities would, in turn, be dependent on BC Ferries to advise on what response they are able provide, and on any risks associated with that response.

The question of whether or not BC Ferries would be able to transport private vehicles in an emergency response situation would be a matter for the emergency authorities to determine. BC Ferries will prioritise life over assets, but recognises that the ability to move vehicles assists the movement of people on both sides. Normal practice is, however, to take foot passengers on first.

BC Ferries points out that the emergency authorities would likely ask them to suspend travel to the island for anyone other than emergency responders in the event of a major incident on the island.  This means that family members already off island may not be able to return until the emergency response is concluded.

This advice will be updated with any further information received from BC Ferries.

Printed eSPOKES Deadline

TICF (Thetis Island Community Fund) has provided the printed eSPOKES for seniors without access to computers so that they can keep current with Thetis Island happenings.

The printed eSPOKES goes to press after the Sunday morning email edition and is sent out in the Monday mail.  Please ensure that your date-sensitive item is received prior to Sunday morning, preferably by Saturday evening.

If not in time, those seniors will miss out on your item.  If you know of a Thetis Island senior who does not have access to a computer and is not currently receiving the printed eSPOKES, please let us know.

Smoky Skies above Thetis

Today's smoke on Thetis Island is from fires near Pemberton, Port Hardy and Sproat Lake.  Thetis Islanders with respiratory problems should avoid exercise and stay indoors.

Please remain alert to signs of fire but aware that the smell of smoke currently is from off Thetis Island.

Thanks to all who have been actively watching for signs of fire.

Community News & Information Sharing: e-SOKES & thetisblog

These two volunteer based communication systems share information that is initiated by the people that use them, which is basically the whole of the Thetis Island community.

The simpler it is for us to pass this information along, makes it easier for the volunteers who are taking the time to make life more connected for islanders.

Please try to send your notice to both espokes@gmail.com and editor@thetisblog.net to be sure that the notice goes to both.  We try our hardest to communicate between each other, but would appreciate it notices are shared directly by the sender.
