July 1st & 4th Thank You ~

I would like to say thank you to all the folks that came out and participated in,and contributed to,both of our events to celebrate the fabulous spirit of Gwen Hunter and an especially huge thank you to Don Hunter for letting us have the potluck and jam session on the beach.Dinner turned out good and it was wonderful to listen to all the different musicians that played for us.
There was a great turnout for both occasions and it was beautiful to feel all the love that everyone has for Gwen.
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer!
Thanks again,
Cat Fielding

ThINC ~ Nature Camp Art Displays

Our campers at the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy Summer Day Camp have created wonderful art this week in Fairyslipper Forest on Burchell Hill (turn left at the rock where the trail forks) to see their forest weavings, examples of ephemeral art, which will stay in the forest until decomposed back to nature.

Monica & Kelsey Rush ~ Taking a Stand Against Fast Fashion

Bikini Empire is a local bikini brand started two years ago by Kelsey & Monica Rush. The bikinis are designed on Gabriola Island and are manufactured locally in Vancouver’s small but vibrant garment sector. With a passion for the water not unlike a pair of mermaids, this duo of creative female entrepreneurs has chosen to take a stand against the fashion industry’s norm of cheap material and cheap labour which results in cheap products, and unacceptably low labour and environmental standards.

In order to get their suits across Canada, and eventually the world, they need to increase production levels. For this they need to raise capital, but don’t want to go to investors. So, they came up with the plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise the extra funds that Bikini Empire needs to expand across Canada, and the Caribbean.

For those of you unfamiliar with Kickstarter, KS is an online crowdfunding platform that allows small businesses or individuals to publish 'projects' with a projected funding goal. In order to attract backers, each project offers various reward levels. This means that if you want to support a project, you can pledge money and get a reward in return. In most cases, including theirs, the rewards are the actual product (bikinis plus hats and t-shirts for men, and great surfing polaroid photos), so a lot of people that frequent KS are people that like to 'shop with their heart'.

American Tribal Style (ATS) Belly Dance Workshop

Weather permitting, Rhiannyn, ATS instructor from Abbotsford, will be holding a workshop at the Community Tennis Courts on Thursday, August 6 - 7:30 p.m.  Suggested donation of $5 per person. Register by emailing halakidance@gmail.com

A little blurb about Rhiannyn and ATS:

Rhiannyn is a certified ATS® FatChanceBellyDance® Instructor, and the only Sister Studio in the central and upper Fraser Valley region. She has been belly dancing for 9 years, and exclusively studying ATS® for the last 6 years.

She is also the first Canadian ATS® Instructor to complete her Sister Studio Continuing Education Recertification. This was obtained by completing 13 hrs of workshop instruction with a FCBD® Instructor, plus taking 3 private lessons with Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman, Sandi Ball, and Wendy Allen of FatChanceBellyDance®.

The majestic beauty, in the carriage and costuming, leads one to believe this dance is from some long ago era. However, the roots of ATS® began in the 1970s with Masha Archer, and morphed into its present form, under the direction of Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman, starting in 1987. Although American Tribal Style® is a modern North American form of belly dance, its creation stems from tribal dance steps found in India, the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain.

American Tribal Style® appears to be choreographed, but it rarely is, and relies mainly on cues given from a leader to their followers. The dance is, therefore, improvised by creating it in the moment.
