Everyone should know there is a wasp nest at the bottom of the beach access trail next to the ferry terminal. It's in one of the logs on the beach right at the bottom of the trail.
C. Rennie
Instead of one big group, I am opening my studio to make Japanese stab bound books (journals) on the following days: July 30th, September 10th and October 22nd.
I can have 3 people at a time. The class would run from 9:00 - 2:00ish. The cost is $25.00 per person and this includes all supplies. Bring a bag lunch.
Please let me know by email if you are interested at: lebaronjane@gmail.com. This will be a first come, first served affair.
Camera club meets this Thursday 25th June, 7pm in the library.
Everyone welcome,
Carol Sowerby
We are moving up to EXTREME HAZARD on Monday, June 22. We all knew this ban was coming early this year. The forecast is for continuing hot and drying weather and there is more fire load buildup in the bush. All campfire permits are cancelled as of June 22nd until further notice.
As you have probably heard on the media, the Province is urging outdoor smokers to extinguish cigarette butts in water and vehicle operators to avoid idling on roadside dry grass. Here on Thetis we are posting NO Smoking signs on the Community Trail and reminding you that we have extra problems with drying long grass on road edges and the annual dry arbutus leaves underfoot. Please report any smoke to 911 and we will investigate.
Resident walkers and hikers have already reported the remains of illegal campfires with littered cigarette butts in the bush and this activity threatens the island.
TIVFD
The TIVFD is looking for new volunteers for water tending duties during a fire/wildfire event. Applicants must have a good driving record and be able to safely drive a very large truck carrying a 1,000 gallon full water tank. No air brakes...just Class 5 license . You must also be capable of carrying a portable pump or other fire equipment up and down an embankment and work safely by water with minimum supervision.
We will train you for the water tending duties and you would be covered by WorkSafeBC when training or on a response. We hope never to have to use your skills, but if there is a large fire incident auxiliary members can take over non-frontline duties and thus free up firefighters for the hot zone. Water Tending is an extremely important facet of any fire response. We have two auxiliary members on the Water Tending Team (Sjoerd VanKleef and James Alton) but we need two more in case Sjoerd or James are not available when needed.
Write to chief11@telus.net if interested. Thanks!
The TIVFD needs someone with a sewing machine willing to sew two seams on 14 new white face cloths to make pouches for cold packs for sprained ankles etc. Thread colour doesn't matter. The cloths are for patient comfort so the plastic cold pack is not next to the skin. Once we use one, we never see it again.
email chief11@telus.net. Many thanks!
I am taking a job with BC Ferries, and am looking for a place to rent.
Thanks
