Oily Rag Danger

On Wednesday, a resident was shocked to discover a fire burning against the front wall of his new house.  On fire was a can of xylene solvent and some rags together with a  can of oil based Sikkens stain that was boiling and ready to burst into flames. He called 911 and was able to douse the fire with a garden hose by the time the fire department arrived.  His quick action saved the house and the surrounding forest.

The young workman applying the Sikkens the day before was not aware of the dangers of spontaneous combustion (he is now!). When oily or solvent soaked rags are bunched up and left in a pile, oxidation generates heat, enough over time to burst into flames.

In this case, the ambient temperature was only about 15*C but the oil and xylene soaked rags generated enough heat to warm the xylene to more than 30*C, its flash point, causing its fumes to burst into flames, igniting the can of liquid xylene.

There are many opinions on the proper disposal of oily rags.  The easiest, cheapest solution is to place them in a non-combustible container (e.g. metal bucket) and fill it with water. Add detergent and rinse the oil out before disposing of the rags.  DO NOT place oily rags, even wet ones, in the garbage, you would merely be putting someone else at risk down the line.

ThINC Seeking Summer Student Accommodation

The Cowichan Land Trust has offered ThINC a part-time Canada Summer Jobs student. His name is Ricky Belanger and he has just graduated from UVic in marine biology and is going on to a Masters program in the fall.

He'll be helping us out at Ocean Learn Fest and offering some ecology programs to the community throughout the summer. We're excited to have him on board. We're looking for accommodation for him on Thetis during July and August. A house sitting opportunity would be welcome but he is also able to pay some rent.

Contact Ann Eriksson at 250-246-8176 or email me at ann.eriksson4@gmail.comif you have a lead for him and I'll pass the information on.

Thanks! Ann

Ink Cartridges to Go!

I work at Capernwray and found some old ink cartridges for Epson printers. They will expire soon in June 2016 but are original Epson sealed in boxes never opened. Don’t know if they are still good but they do go for over $40 each at Staples. Therefore, I’m just wondering if anyone on the island would have a matching printer so that they can get used rather than thrown away. The matching printers are listed on the cartridge boxes but here is a list:

2 Epson T009201 Color Ink Cartridges for printers: Epson Stylus Photo 900, 1270 or 1280

2 Epson T007201 Black Ink Cartridges for printers: Epson Stylus Photo 780, 785EPX, 825, 870, 875DC, 875DCS, 890, 900, 1270, 1280

1 Epson T040120 Black Ink Cartridge for printers: Epson Stylus C62, CX3200

Anyone interested can contact me by phone at the Capernwray office or by email:sfalardeau@capernwray.ca
