Discussion about home and community care on Thetis Island. This discussion is designed to continue the conversations held over the years to identify the needs, what has been done to date, and to set out next steps.
Thursday, February 5th from 2-3PM at Forbes Hall.
If you are unable to attend but want to participate in the ongoing discussion, please send your thoughts and comments to ckasting@telus.net.
Hello Thetis Island families,
On Monday February 9th Sally Hart will be doing a workshop for children on local First Nations legends.
The Thetis Island Homeschoolers have arranged for her to come to the community centre at 1:30 Monday February 9th. Monday February 9th is Family Day so we thought it would be nice to extend an invite to the community since the local school children will not be in regular classes.
Please RSVP so we can have supplies available for you . This is not a drop off program so we prefer adults to stay with young children. Older children may be allowed to attend alone with permission.
Dear Islanders,
Penelakut Seafoods would like to invite Thetis Island community members to a consultation meeting to have open discussions about the expansion of our aquaculture tenure for Manila clams located at the Cut between Penelakut Island and Thetis Island.
Location: Forbes Hall
Date: February 16, 2015
Time: 5:00 pm
Today I received a (E-Mail) letter from the office of; Hon. Jean Crowder, MP/Nanaimo-Cowichan.
It appears that Hon MP Crowder has been following up on related issues, as well as some of the same complaints from numerous residents in the Cowichan Valley.
I have been sent copies of letters between Minister Moore’s office and MP Crowder’s concerning Hi-Speed access issues.
In the letter from Minister Moore’s office it states the Federal Government is committed to having rural areas have accessibility to Hi-Speed (broadband) networks.
Who know when, or if we will ever have our concerns addressed, but at least we are still on the “Map”, so to speak. I felt it can’t hurt to keep sending letters to members of our government. I have also been in contact, once again, with senior management of TELUS. Though, these communications are going no where.
As I said; It is TELUS-Nothing, where the future is NOT friendly. The last comment from TELUS management was, and I quote; “We consider this matter closed”.
I responded; “Well, you may consider closed, but we surely don’t”.
This OTHER comment from TELUS should really get you fuming; “Does Thetis Island want charity from TELUS”! That was a verbatim quote
Well, who knows, keep the faith as they say, and, there is an election coming soon!

From The “Dark Side”
Comment from "Jim" ~ Did you ask Shaw to service the island?
Response from Steve: No one does, not Shaw, not Rogers, not Bill-Bob's Phone Co, Ltd. Nada, zilch.
You can get Satellite, but that's about it. And Sat is Iffy here on this side.
Thanks.
We have filed a formal complaint against Telus for a number of reasons. They also took away the local phone line access for Dial-Up a few months ago. So, Uniserve had to find a long distance number for us bumpkins to use. If you think Dial-Up slow, try connecting a LD number
We are in need of a chimney inspection and are wondering if anyone else is in need of a chimney sweep. it would reduce the cost and his efficiency if we booked a few visits on the same day. let me know if you are interested.

YOGA CANCELLED FEB. 3
Unfortunately there is a conflict with another event for this same day and to make life simpler for all of the Island Trust representatives, we are going to cancel the yoga class on Tuesday, February 3rd for 9:30 to 10:45. So do your off island running about and come on out for Thursday’s class. Then be back if you have an interest in the Senior’s – Elder Care meeting at 1:00 in the hall too.
See you all tomorrow. Lovin’ the warm, blue skies.
Warmly, Dawn Gordon
A big thank you to all those who came out to work in the new cemetery area: Claude Leger, Wayne Loiselle, Pam Lee, Nan Beals, Rod and Myrna Brownlee, Dave Steen, Joan and Dave Smirl, Vicki Walker, Wendy and Glen Andison, and Gurk Sarioglu.
A tip of the hat to the young men from Capernwray who also came to move mulch.
It was back breaking work digging out blackberry roots, cleaning up ditches and levelling mounds of soil. Thanks to your efforts we are making progress towards creating a new green cemetery space which is going to be beautiful!
