New Discussion Page on Thetisblog ~

Over the past couple of years, we have noticed an increase in the amount of open letters to the public regarding Islands Trust, Ferries, TIRRA Solid Waste Management, etc.  A page has been set up on thetisblog.net for these letters (and responses to the letters) to be posted.  E-Spokes was never intended to host these types of postings, however thetisblog can easily accommodate them.

For future reference please send any articles or letters on subjects up for island discussion to editor@thetisblog.net for posting.

Thanks, from the e-Spokes team and thetisblog.

Home & Community Care Meeting

An initial meeting was held on Thursday, Feb 5th to talk about the need for on-island medical support for people with health related or age related issues so they can remain in their own homes for as long as possible.  It also recognized the need for respite support for caregivers.  25 people attended the event with another 12 contributing their thoughts by email. It is clear that everyone wants at least some health related supports to be available on the island.

People brainstormed both medical and practical needs.  Many people knew of other communities that had had similar issues and found solutions for them.  We started building a list of these communities so we can learn from others.  We also talked about possible options for Thetis Islanders.  These ideas will be included in ongoing discussions.  Of course, all ideas are welcome and will inform our own thinking.  We realize that we need to be practical and supportive as we look for long term solutions for the community. Detailed notes were taken and can be emailed to anyone who is interested.  The meeting was also taped which can be copied for those who want it.

A committee was set up to take the information provided from this meeting and move it forward.  It will include the following as first steps:

  1. Begin or continue discussions with Island Health about how to move forward.

  2. Do a needs assessment with people on the island about the number of people needing support.

  3. Look at quick do-able solutions for some immediate problems as we explore long term solutions for the community at large.

Four people agreed to be on the committee. We are looking for another 2 or 3 people who are interested in being part of the committee.  Also, if you have comments or thoughts, we want to hear from you.  We will also collect information from you when we do the needs assessment.

Please email Colleen Kasting at ckasting@telus.net if you are interested in being on the committee or have comments.

First Nations Legends for Children Workshop ~ e-mail contact

Hello Thetis Island families,

On Monday February 9th Sally Hart will be doing a workshop for children on local First Nations legends.
The Thetis Island Homeschoolers have arranged for her to come to the community centre at 1:30 Monday February 9th.  Monday February 9th is Family Day so we thought it would be nice to extend an invite to the community since the local school children will not be in regular classes.

Please RSVP so we can have supplies available for you . This is not a drop off program so we prefer adults to stay with young children. Older children may be allowed to attend alone with permission.

Please could all interested families email me at rogersfamily@greenprintstudio.ca

Thank you
Airi

Teddy Suiker Biography

Dear Islanders,

Having some recovery time behind us after Teddy's death, her sisters and Merry would like to invite Thetis Islanders, over the next two months, to jot down some memories of Dear Teddy (Dr. Alice Suiker).

It is a challenging and fascinating puzzle as she was a many-faceted and wonderful Woman.
Please email me at: merrygooding@gmail.com or mail me at: Box 6-7
Many thanks for any poignant memories you may wish to share.
