Continue the Uphill Battle against Invasive Rodents: NORWAY & BLACK RATS!

Sad that we haven't heard or seen anything from our cat Mounzer, so it seems I have to continue the battle alone -> reducing the numbers of invasive NORWAY & BLACK RATS (Rattus norvegicus & rattus).

Our property was now rodent, and even as good as slug!!, free but it will not stay that way without staying always alert and ready. Mounzer didn't help with the slug but with the rats :)

Believing that if you don't see any rats doesn't mean there are none. Rodents are smart! Get a wildlife cam and you certainly can see what is going on.

Maybe rodents are not just as visible during the day, but there is more to do than just removing some scotch broom who threaten local plants and wildlife/ecosystems. To keep the invasive rodent numbers low will help our local ecosystem, especially for the birds to thrive.
BUT like with everything from climate change to politics to whatever.... there is always a load of empty talking with mountains of written documents and reports, but nothing will actual change if it is not actually done. Talking doesn't change anything.

Here is some info from the BC gov and WildsafeBC. There is a load of information out there but ONLY applying/doing the recommendations/trapping will change anything.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/environment/plants-animals-and-ecosystems/invasive-species/alerts/norwayandblackrats_alert.pdf

https://wildsafebc.com/species/rats/

So get up and going and trap these invasive rats before they invade your homes. BUT PLEASE WITHOUT poison and without killing other local wildlife!!

AND if you take a walk on or around Forbes and North Cove - my hope is not lost yet! - and see or hear anything from our cat, Mounzer, please let me know.

Thanks!

The Nature of Water Project 2025

On Saturday, March 22nd, CCR and ThINC are launching, "The Nature of Water Project 2025" @ Forbes Hall, 2-5pm

The event will feature a discussion of our project, a short film "What the Water Tells Us", and keynote address "Dinosaur Pee and the Future of Thetis Island's Water" by David Slade.

David is a former president of the BC Ground Water Association, a current and founding member of the Cowichan Watershed Board and a retired water well driller. His family firm, Drillwell, has drilled a great many wells on Thetis Island. His talk will cover a wide range of water related topics which should be of interest to all Thetis residents.

In addition, we ask that you look for the survey in the upcoming Thetis Island Quarterly where residents are asked to pick water related topics, they are most interested in. Paper copies of the survey and a drop box are also available in the foyer of Forbes Hall.

For more information please contact: ccr@thetisisland.net.

A Reminder About Earthquake Preparedness

Some of us here on Thetis felt the 4.8 magnitude earthquake at 13:26 hrs local time on Friday that was situated between Sechelt and Port Mellon, and some of us didn’t. Some of us have already thought about earthquake preparedness and some of us haven’t yet got around to it. Here is the Preparedness BC website for earthquakes that you might want to peruse:

Why We Need TIRRA... TIRRA Executive

Many people are daunted by the titles, but while critically important jobs, they aren't that demanding.

The President's primary function - and it can be his or her only function if that's all they want to do - is to call and chair meetings. Vice-President is back-up for when the President can't take a meeting. Everything else can be done by the various committee chairs, and joint action is by consensus at the executive meetings. And there aren't usually a lot of those - between meeting communication is pretty easy, these electronic days, and generally the different committees just get on with their own jobs. The President can, as a member of the board, be involved in more if he or she chooses, but it's not a requirement of the office.

The Secretary, likewise, has one job - keep minutes of the meetings - and there's usually a lot of help with that. A detailed agenda (assembled from input by the board) is the outline right there, and you have everyone's help with any bit you might have missed. And very occasionally, there might have to be a letter written. The board, as a whole, helps with composing it, and the Communications Committee can help with the distribution.

The Treasurer's job does require some experience in accounting and reporting, but we don't have a huge budget, so it's manageable.

The big thing is, President and Secretary are both slots that need filling right now, so please consider putting your name forward for one of them...

(another in the series of short notes on what TIRRA does for us all, and why we need it.)

Thanks for reading!
Veronica for the TIRRA Executive Board

Missing Cat!

Since yesterday we are missing our cat, Mounzer. He never missed a breakfast, lunch and dinner in over 8 years since we have him. He is usually around and follow me everywhere whatever I do if milling or working on in the garden etc.

The only time he is leaving the property is when he is tracking rats. He caught one again two days and since the snow is gone there is more movement with rats and mice.

I would appreciate if in the neighbourhood you could check if he isn't locked in somewhere.

He is shy. Please let me know if you notice something.

Thanks!

Matthias , 313 Forbes Rd.
