Seal Pup ~ just doing what comes naturally...

This little guy was found on the beach under the dock on Thetis. He was breathing and making small movements. He didn't look injured, but there were worries that he was orphaned or abandoned so the Vancouver Marine Mammal Rescue Centre was called to get him some help. The lovely people at the rescue center examined the photos that were sent them and established that the little guy seemed stable. They explained that it's very common for seals to leave their babies on the beach for a few hours at a time while they went away looking for food. Everyone was so relieved to know that this cute little baby seal was not in trouble.

Andy Lamb and Peter Luckham also told us that little pups like this one commonly get left in the sun while mom goes to feed...

Ocean LearnFest ~ Tuesday July 5, 2016

Do you have eelgrass on your beach? Do you like to fish? Eat crab? The indomitable eelgrass expert Nikki Wright from Seachange Conservation will be on Thetis for two events on Tuesday to tell us why eelgrass is so important for all of us.

Join her at North Cove beach at 11am for a beach session.  (Please park on North Cove Rd and walk in). $10/person. Beach shoes recommended.

Then at 7:30 at Forbes Hall, Nikki will be giving a talk and slide presentation about eelgrass ecology. Come out and show her our famous Thetis Island hospitality!

TIVFD ~ Possible Smoke Notice

On July 9th, Telegrapgh Harbour Marina will have a fully self contained, inspected and safe BBQ appliance, owned by Smiity's Smokin Pig, operating at their facility for a private catering contract.

The unit has no draft holes and has a screened chimney and a propane hot water tank inside the main tank.  There may be some smoke emanating from the chimney as the pig cooks.  The Fire Dept. will be checking on the unit that day, so if you see a bit of wispy smoke from that location, do not be alarmed.

However, we welcome any reports of smoke from other locations that day, or on any other days.  As you know, bush fires are now almost a daily occurrence in the Cowichan Valley. We don't want to be included in the tv news for one here!

What's on Monday at Ocean LearnFest

Curious about the marine animals that live under the ocean off Thetis Island? Come on down to the Community Dock on Monday at 9:15 a.m. and watch  Andy Lamb and Peter Luckham dive and bring up seastars, sea cucumbers, crabs, fish and other subtidal animals non-divers rarely see. Naturalists will be on hand to answer questions about the fascinating life histories of these Salish Sea inhabitants.

Then treat yourself to a fabulous feature length film at Forbes Hall at 7:30 pm. If you love the ocean, you won't want to miss Mission Blue: The Life of Sylvia Earle. See some exquisite underwater footage and learn about the pioneering work of the world's first female diver and oceanographer and her efforts to create Hope Spots, a global network of Marine Protected Areas. Then stay afterwards for a community discussion about how we Thetis Islanders can work to improve the health of the waters around our home.

Ocean LearnFest is brought to you by the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy with financial support from the Thetis Island Community Fund. For a full schedule of events go to
