Plot Preparation Contractor Needed

As many of you know in the community long time resident Kevin Hughes left the island earlier this year. Kevin was contracted by St. Margaret's Cemetery for a number of years to prepare the plots for the interment of cremated remains.  With his departure from Thetis we are in need of a person who would be willing to take up this position. The job would require this person to be on call to prepare the site when necessary. This generally happens 3 to 4 times a year.  We usually give about a week’s notice and ask that the plot be ready no more than 2 days before the actual interment. This is a paid position at $50.00 per job  and normally takes about one hour  depending on the plot location.

Those interested, please contact Suzanne Sarioglu 246-9965 or sarioglu@telus.net

Yoga Club News

Whew, does time fly by fast these days - most days I feel like the kid at the end of a kite string in gale force winds…  If I get up earlier in the morning the wind doesn’t seem as strong, so here I am at 5 am typing some Yoga Notes and News.

We formed a Yoga Club two weeks ago and we now have two yoga teachers -  Dawn Gordon and Sonya Pitcairn.  I am excited to have another yoga teacher on island I sure hope I can create some time to get to her classes too.  Dawn is going to continue teaching the Tuesday morning class and in June Sonya is going to restart the Thursday morning class.

Currently the times are 9:30 – 11:00 on Tuesday, and today’s class will end at 10:45 – May 13th.

However, we are exploring different options- either shortening the class to 75 minutes or shifting the time to begin at 9:15 so that people can catch the 11:10 ferry if they need to go off island before noon.  Let me know what you think?

The Monday Yin Yoga is not happening until September, there simply are not enough hours in the day and islanders are too busy with gardening, boating, golfing, yard work and more to commit to yet another activity, so we will just wait until fall to begin this class.

I will send out another email with further details by the end of the week.  Enjoy the warm spring days, come stretch those aching gardening muscles, it feels so good!!

You can reach me, Dawn Gordon, at dawn_gordon@telus.net or 250-210-0826;  I am the main contact person for the yoga club.

PS:  If you have a special event and would like yoga in your home or space let us know we are happy to accommodate as best we can in our full schedules.  Yoga before a wedding what an honour.  I get to share a theme of love poses on the grass of Overbury Resort, facing west over the Pacific Ocean, to guests who have flown in all the way from Venezuela, how special.

Nameste,

Dawn

Shimmy Mob ~ Success!

On International Belly Dance Day (May 10th, 2014) we took part in an international shimmy mob. We danced for the community and visitors of Thetis Island, raised (quite a bit of) money for the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society (Duncan, BC), and had a lot of fun dancing for our cause. Thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers, donors and everyone who gave us a smile :)

Friday Fire Fun

Friday May 9th is the Fire Extinguisher Clinic and the chance to tour the new Cowichan Valley Fire & Life Safety Education Trailer at 1:00 pm.  Bring your fire extinguishers to the Firehall on Mission Road for a free check up and take part in the live fire lesson on using an extinguisher.  New fire extinguishers will be available to purchase and you can order a reflective regulation-size Lot Number sign from Aggressive Fire Safety.  There will be a couple of nifty door prizes and Sidney Rukus from Chemainus Girl Guides will be selling Girl Guide Cookies.  Due to tides and the size of the trailer, we have it on Thetis for only one day.  See you at the Firehall on Friday!

Post Office News

Just a few reminders surrounding changes at the post office.

The postal rates went up March 31. Regular letter stamps are on a two tier system.

Here are the current prices for quick reference - all before tax:

Domestic stamps: $1.00 each when you buy them in singles, or

$0.85 each when you buy them in booklets of 10

Letters weighing 30-50 grams and US stamps are $1.20

oversized letters under 100 grams are $1.80

International stamps are $2.50 each

Also to prevent more waste coming to Thetis island please contact me at the Post Office if you don't wish to recieve any flyers (Unaddressed Admail). A lot of people are leaving flyers on the table by the Postal boxes. Please take them home with you as the wind tends to blow them around. There used to be a plastic bag for the flyers but too many times people were dropping their garbage (ie: Apple cores, popsicle stcks, tin cans...etc) into the bag.

Thanks all!

Kevin, your friendly neighbourhood postmaster
