Community Emergency Alert System

By subscribing to receive emergency alerts, users will get more immediate information to protect themselves and their family. Cowichan Alert is used to alert people in an affected area (anywhere is the Cowichan region, including Thetis Island) of the following types of incidents when they occur or likely to occur imminently:

  • Wildfires (particularly for evacuation alerts and orders)
  • Flooding
  • Hazardous Material release
  • Landslide / post-earthquake hazards
  • Severe weather events (Environment Canada Alerts come through the system, these are usually advisories)
  • Significant road closures/disruptions (Drive BC Alerts come through the system, these are just advisories not life threatening)
  • Boil Water Alerts

Thetis Island Improvement District Special General Meeting: Saturday, August 10th

The Thetis Island Improvement District (TIID) will hold a Special General Meeting Saturday August 10th at 10 AM at Forbes Hall Community Centre.
The purpose of the meeting is to obtain formal support from landowners for the recommendation by the TIID trustees to proceed with the purchase of a new front line fire engine.
This will be done by a secret ballot vote.
Please see a list of documents and commentary in the Engine One Replacement Documents at: https://www.thetisislandfire.ca/tiid-engine1.html
We will provide more information on the final purchase price and financing plans prior to the August 10th meeting.

Sea Star Count - Thank you!

A big thanks to everyone who came out to the sea star count at Clam Bay this past weekend! T

he four teams of counters made short work of the task and contributed to community science and our understanding of sea star wasting along the BC coastline! We counted over 1600 sea stars with only around 30 that were wasting.

Also, thanks once again to the Lambs for being excellent hosts. The company was grand and the cakes delicious!

EXTREME DANGER CLASS Reminders

We are all hoping this EXTREME DANGER Rating ends soon and High Hazard Activities can resume, at least for early shift work. However, the EXTREME DANGER Rating remains in effect on Thetis Island at this time.

We appreciate your patience and politeness when dealing with our volunteers who are tasked with the investigation of complaints of High Hazard Activities taking place during this EXTREME DANGER Rating period. Neither the TIVFD nor the Improvement District set the regulations that govern BC Fire Departments during Wildfire season. If you are unhappy with the restrictions, please contact your MLA Doug Routley
Douglas.Routely.MLA@leg.bc.ca and he will take your concerns to the BCWS to consider making amendments to the Wildfire Service BC Regulations.

Solid fuel outdoor fires remain prohibited. Propane campfire appliances are allowed.

Aside from the two current Out of Control wildfires on Southern Vancouver Island at Old Man Lake and Sooke Potholes that have BCWS crews on scene, there have been daily bush fires here in our region that our Cowichan Valley fire departments have been responding to…all human-caused, and those fires are not reflected in the news media.

Thank you for your continuing vigilance and safety during this wildfire season. The TIVFD would also welcome new volunteers to the fire department to assist us with our community responses all year. Please contact the Fire Chief or Deputy Chief Chad Kerr for more information.
