Still Collecting Funds for the Penelakut Families

The Fire Department is still collecting cash, cheques or Walmart gift cards for our Penelakut neighbours who lost everything in the devastating fire earlier this month. We will be collecting donations up to February 12th and will take the envelope over to the Penelakut Band Office the next day.

You can always find a TIVFD fire fighter or two at Soup’s On Wednesdays or drop off your donation at the firehall after 6:30 pm on Wednesdays when we are training, or if you see a vehicle parked in front of the fire hall anytime (meaning someone is at the hall to take your gift). You can also put your donation in an envelope and drop it off at the post office for the fire department. Or pass your donation to a fire fighter neighbour that you know, and they will add it to the fund.

Thank you for your generosity. The Penelakut families truly appreciate your support.

ThINC - January Issue of The Ripple

Hello Thetis Islanders,

It’s the middle of winter, and while the snow hasn’t arrived yet, the days have been surprisingly sunny. So much so, in fact, that the grass is starting to grow! Even though spring feels far off, it’s never too early to start thinking about your garden. In this edition of The Ripple, we’re diving into the benefits of “messy gardening” — a simple approach where a little benign neglect can go a long way in supporting the creatures and life that call your garden home.

Happy reading and enjoy the sunshine!

TICA Membership Renewal Time

TICA Annual Membership Renewals have now been mailed out. We are including a link to the renewal form in this post.

If you have already received your letter and renewal form, you may have noticed that TICA is no longer managing TIRRA’s membership renewals. This decision was not taken lightly, but put simply, TICA’s work maintaining the data and financial recording for both organizations had become too onerous. Furthermore, as a CRA registered charity, the TICA Board must be diligent in keeping to TICA’s purposes, and the collection of fees for another organization is not within those purposes.

TICA and TIRRA have enjoyed a collaborative relationship since the Thetis Island Ratepayers’ Association (as TIRRA was named at that time) helped form the Thetis Island Community Association in 1981 to accept the gift of land from the Forbes sisters for a future community hall. As TIRRA was not allowed to own property under its constitution and bylaws, TICA was created. Over many years, TICA and TIRRA have shared membership data and the collection of fees. This will now be done by each Association and TIRRA will be sending out renewal information independently. TICA looks forward to continuing to work with TIRRA when opportunities arise.

We are thankful for the community’s long-standing support of these two key organizations.

Resignation of TIRRA President

I am stepping down immediately, as President of TIRRA.  I was the wrong person for the job and shouldn’t have taken it 16 months ago.

This in no way diminishes the wonderful work that the TIRRA committees do, to make Thetis the great place that it is.

My thanks to all those volunteers.  I wish good luck to my successor.

Gord Prescott

From the editor: thank you, Gord, for taking on the position when TIRRA was in need of a President.  Without people stepping forward for these roles, Thetis would not be the wonderful Thetis that we have today.
