The People’s Apothecary Garden - Plant of the Week #17 - Borage

Other than bee-ing a pollinator favourite, borage imparts a fresh cucumber scent that is a great addition to summer drinks. It is known as a natural calming agent and was considered the ‘herb of courage’ for knights preparing for battle. Today it is commercially cultivated for its medicinal seed oil. Although delicate, it flowers bloom from May through to October.

CHEK News Story

Southern Vancouver Island remains under an extreme fire danger rating, and models are predicting smoke to roll into the area early Sunday morning.

“On the southern tip of the Island, we have extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts,” said Sam Bellion, Coastal Fire information officer.
“So far this season on the Coast, almost all of our starts are suspected to be human-caused,” said Bellion. “As the hot weather continues and the firedanger rating increases, we want to make sure we’re devoting our resources to the lightning-caused wildfires, and not those human starts.”

Volunteer Editor Required

TIRRA Thetis Island Residents' and Ratepayers') is looking for a single project volunteer "editor".

Bylaws were last updated in 2022, to provide urgent attention to issues relating to meeting notifications. It was subsequently identified an additional review was required for clarification and simplification. This work has been completed, but we have become "document blind".... TIRRA needs a detail-oriented individual to review with fresh eyes. Whether you prefer to work on paper copies or electronically...we can accommodate. Can you spare a little time to help?

Reminder: Sea Star Count - This Sunday, July 21, 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Come on your own or with a team to help us monitor sea star health as we count the number of sea stars in Clam Bay (all ages welcome)!

Resident naturalist, Andy Lamb, will talk about the importance of sea stars, the impacts of wasting disease, and monitoring trends.

Wear (grippy) boots or water shoes as well as pants or shorts that can get wet! If you can, please bring a flashlight for those hard-to-spot sea stars tucked away in rocky crevasses.

We will be meeting on the beach in front of Andy and Virginia’s house (120 Clam Bay Road) at 9:30 am. Please park at the roundabout at the end of Clam Bay Road.
