Attn: Parents and Grandparents!

This weekend is the kid's stuff exchange on Thetis! TICA has graciously lent us the pavilion for the weekend so drop off your used things that you no longer need or that your kids/grandkids have outgrown and choose something new! Sports goods, books, games, puzzles, toys, baby things, anything that is no longer right for your family but could be great for another.

Drop off starting Friday evening. Anything left on Sunday afternoon will be loaded up for the thrift stores. Please, please, please don't drop anything that you wouldn't bring to a thrift store yourself - if it's destined for the dump, please take it there.

Feel free to text me if you have questions!

Fall Quarterly "deadline"

This is a heads-up that we will be working on the Fall Quarterly in August.

The deadline for getting articles, stories, announcements, ads - whatever - either to us, or at least warning that it's coming, is August 10th.

Please send all submissions to quarterly@thetisisland.net. But if no-one has acknowledged receipt of what you've sent within a couple of days, please let me know at 250-701-9336.

What's fresh @ Jollity Farm?

Open Saturday 10am to 1pm

Lots of additional fresh goodies added to our list this week so you can plan your meals ahead!

Did you know that we work with about 5-7 local farms and two growers cooperatives each week? Farmers work so hard all year long and suddenly when faced with a great abundance they sometimes run out of time or avenues to sell their product. What a tragedy! It is especially challenging when local products have to compete against cheap imports at the grocery store. It's good for the environment, good for local economy and we get to nourish ourselves with the most nutritious food, when we source fresh and local instead of food that has traveled so far.

From our friend Pamela at Silver Rill Berries:
Cherries
Black currants
Red currants
(we are bringing a small amt. of currants this week. If you'd like to order more for jam or jelly making please let us know)

From her son Andrew: (his crops are about to bolt with the heat so he has a lot to pick!)
Cauliflower & Broccoli
(do you need extra for pickling or lacto-ferments?)

Plus:
Flower bouquets (you can order ahead as a gift for yourself or someone else :)
mixed greens
carrots
beets
peas
beans
green onion
dill
zucchini
cucumbers
peppers
fresh garlic
melons
strawberries
blueberries
raspberries
tomatoes
...and more!

Thanks for supporting local agriculture!

Danger Class Moving to EXTREME on July 18th

The Fire Danger Class Rating is forecasted to move to EXTREME Danger on Thursday, July 18th, by the three reporting fire weather stations we use as data points for Thetis Island.

This means that all High Hazard Activities in or near the forested areas of Thetis will be prohibited after 1 pm on July 20th. Early shift (work to 1pm and then a 2-hour fire watch posted) can continue on July 18, 19 and 20th and then must cease.

Do not hesitate to report any daytime columns of smoke to 911. The Province-wide shutdown of all outdoor fires, including campfires, continues. You can use approved propane stove or campfire appliances during the complete ban, but no solid fuel fires are allowed.

Thank you for being vigilant and safe as we move into the hot and dry wildfire months.

Shq’ula’tth’us

phonetic:Shqul ah tth'us or try shuk'kalaat'tus

We invite the community to join us for a special gathering to acknowledge and honour Shq’ula’tth’us (refuge), the Hul’q’umi’num place name and history shared by Pune'luxutth Elder Florence James.

· When: 11:30 am Wednesday, July 17th
· Where: Marina Drive meets Pilkey Point Road, by the slough.

Elder Florence James will speak about the significance of this place in Pune'luxutth history, offering an excellent opportunity for place-based learning about this unique part of the Island’s geography.

Learn also about the more recent use of the valley beyond, over 100 years of farming.
Shq’ula’tth’us continues to be a place of refuge for wetland flora and fauna.

Join us in this special Island event.

ThINC (Thetis Island Nature Conservancy)
TIRRA (Thetis Island Residents and Ratepayers Association / trails)

No Driveway Drop Off

Dear Island Neighbours

We kindly ask that you not drop off your personal belongings that you are trying to get rid of at the entrance Capernwray's main driveway. Instead, we suggest you take them to the nearest recycling centre, thrift store or put such items on your own driveway if you are wanting to give them away. We would appreciate that those who placed some items there over the weekend, would come and collect them.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Capernwray Harbour Office.

Thank you.
