Detour on Pilkey Point Road Wednesday

Be advised that there will be a Detour on Pilkey Point Road on Wednesday, July 17, from approx. 11 am to noon while the Shq’ula’tth’us event is taking place. The “Pot of Gold” corner will be closed to through traffic from the north intersection of Pilkey Point Road and Marina Drive (by the slough) to the south intersection (near the boat launch). Vehicles will be directed around Marina Drive. If you are needing to catch the 11:05 ferry from Pilkey Point Road please leave yourself time for the detour.

For safety reasons with the detour, please do not park on Marina Drive along the slough on either side of the road. No parking will be allowed on Marina Drive on that stretch of road during the event.

For those planning on attending the Shq’ula’tth’us event, you will be directed by the TIVFD Traffic Control persons on where to park if arriving by vehicle. We will get you as close as possible to the site.

Thank you in advance for your patience and assistance with keeping everyone safe on the roads.

The People’s Apothecary Garden - Plant of the Week #16 - Dwarf Mallow

One can never be sure where dwarf mallow might appear at the PAG. This sneaky plant has a tendency to rehome itself year to year, relocating to more optimal nooks. This year it has appeared across the garden from last year’s abode (I guess it had zero tolerance for primrose), wanting more space to spread itself. Aside from its mysterious ways, dwarf mallow is a part of a unique family that includes cotton, okra, and hibiscus. It is entirely edible and helps with intestinal and respiratory issues.

ThINC Lite: Sea Star Count - Sunday, July 21, 9:30 am - 11:30 am

It's time for the Annual Sea Star Count! Come on your own or with a team to help us monitor sea star health as we count the number of sea stars in Clam Bay (all ages welcome)! Resident naturalist, Andy Lamb, will talk about the importance of sea stars, the impacts of wasting disease, and monitoring trends. Be sure to wear (grippy) boots or water shoes as well as pants or shorts that can get wet! If you can, bring a flashlight for those hard-to-spot sea stars tucked away in rocky crevasses. We will be meeting on the beach in front of Andy and Virginia’s house (120 Clam Bay Road) at 9:30 am. Please park at the roundabout at the end of Clam Bay Road.

Parade Contest for Kids

The TIVFD members have decided on a contest for kids for the August 3rd parade.

We would like an 8 1/2” x 11” poster of you riding in the fire truck at the front of the parade. Make it colourful and fun. Put your name, age, and your parent’s contact info on the back. You must be 12 or under and are able to wave and smile for the whole length of the parade because a lot of people will be waving at you!
We will put all of the entries in a box and pull out the lucky poster on July 31st . If a kindergarten child or younger is drawn, then a parent gets to ride in the fire truck too. If a poster from a child 6 yrs or older is drawn, then you can ride by yourself if you want.

We will put a box for your posters on the “table” in front of the fire hall at 296 Mission Road. You don’t have to live here to enter the contest…you just have to be on Thetis for the Parade at 1:30 on August 3rd.
All of the posters we receive will be displayed later in the year at the Christmas Market for everyone to enjoy.

Good Luck!
TIVFD
