Wanted: Wood Chips, Hog Fuel, Shavings

We are seeking wood chips or shavings for our property.

We go across to buy it now so local would be ideal if someone has them.

Hardwoods are preferable but will take nearly any. Have capacity for several loads here.

Venting Index

NOTE: located the right side of this page for easy access.

As you know, even burn permits for yard waste have their limits - size, placement, and water at hand to extinguish it, AND we can't burn during a "poor" or even "fair" venting index. To make it as easy as possible to check what the venting index is for our zone (Southern Vancouver Island), Chief Caldbeck discovered a widget that you can check quickly. It's now on the TIVFD website, at
https://www.thetisislandfire.ca/burning-regulations.html#venting

There's also a link on the left side navigation panel all through the site.

Just as a reminder, here's the reason we need to follow this (from the Burning Regulations page), even during the months when permits aren't required:

“In brief, you are looking for two "good" venting days in a row for a substantial fire, or at least a "good" followed by a "fair". It is illegal to burn in poor venting conditions, as this creates a significant health hazard not only for you, but your neighbours and general area...”

Some people are ignoring the Provincial Regulations and are igniting their yard waste fires on "NO" days of POOR or FAIR Venting for this area. Not only does this cause local smoke pollution of your neighbours, but others on Vancouver Island can also see the smoke and will check the Venting Index, and then complain to the CVRD about airshed pollution. We are trying very hard to not lose our ability to have outdoor burning on Thetis Island while the rest of the CVRD is under severely restricted regulations for backyard burns. If everyone here burns responsibly by following the Smoke Control Regulations we may avoid losing outdoor burning altogether."

Upcoming Influenza and COVID Vaccine Clinic: Thursday, November 21 at Forbes Hall

The upcoming influenza and COVID Vaccine Clinic is online now and can take appointments. Please use the invitation emailed to you by BC Health. Or, call 1 833 838 2323 to book your appointment.

You may only see Influenza as an option, this is due to the timing of the COVID vaccine clinic last May. Go ahead and book for Influenza, and you will be offered COVID at the Clinic, this has been confirmed by Island Health. Note if you call to book, please ask to have the COVID vaccine as well. Either way you will be offered both vaccines if eligible on the day of the clinic.

COVID Vaccine types offered at Clinic: Island health is using two mRNA vaccines: Pfizer ComirnatyR Omicron KP.2 for those 12 years and older, and Moderna SpikevaxR KP.2 for those 6 months – 11 years of age. Depending on supply we should have both of these vaccines at the clinic.

Home Care and Home Support Services on Thetis Island

All Residents on Thetis Island are eligible to receive home care or home support services if they meet the criteria. Often workers, such as nurses or doctors at the hospital, do not think this is the case. Note home support is for personal care. This does not include house cleaning or making meals etc.

If you feel you need to receive home care or home support services, please call 250-739-5749 or 1-877-734-4101 between 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. This is the central intake phone line.

Anyone can make the call to Community Access to see if they, or the person they’re calling on behalf of, qualifies for services. Alternatively, a person can confer with their Primary Care Provider or Social Worker to access this service.

Covid Test Kits

The TIVFD has a limited number of non-expired COVID test kits (exp. In 2026) that are available if you need one. Call or text the Duty Officer or Fire Chief and we will arrange a pick up spot for you. There are several active COVID cases locally and you may want to put your mind at ease that your sniffles really are just a regular seasonal cold.

You can also request a free COVID test kit from any pharmacy when you go to town.
