Reminder for Today: 2026 Thetis Island Calendar Submissions Deadline September 20th

Thetis Island Calendar will be produced once again!

For the 2026 edition, we’re looking for photos of native and naturalized flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial, plus iconic geology. However, as in the past, we welcome all photos of Thetis. 

Cut off for submissions is September 20, 2025. Today.

Only photos 1.4 mb and larger will be considered, and submissions are limited to 8 photos per photographer.

The top 14 images will be chosen for the calendar, with another 20 being chosen for the gallery at the hall (these may be used for notecards). All selected images will be used with photographer’s credit included.

Upon submission of your photograph, you are allowing TICA to use it for the mentioned purposes, and for editing to be done correcting for use and printing.

The photographers of the chosen 34 photographs will be contacted that their photo has been chosen for either the calendar or the gallery.

Photos do not need to be taken in 2025.

Sea Life Centre Hours on Saturday

With only a few weekends left this season, make sure to drop by the Sea Life centre today! We will be joined by a few of our TIME Junior interpreters who are eager to share all they have learned over the Summer. The centre will be open from 1-3pm, this Saturday, located at the Telegraph Harbour Marina.

Keys are also available at the cafe when a staff member isn't present. Make sure to respect the wildlife by washing your hands in the bucket provided, using pinkies only, and keeping hands out of our larger fish tank.

Interested in a Flock of Laying Hens?

We are simplifying some things on the farm in order that we can turn our attention to some big projects this fall.

The demand for eggs is only going up and we'd happily buy all the eggs you can produce to go into the co-op egg venture.

Maybe you'd like the experience of keeping chickens? (great learning opportunity for youth) Perhaps you want them to help clear land or weedy pastures? Maybe you have a greenhouse or area that needs winter fertilizing?

It's hard to say exactly the mix of breeds at this point. Our chickens have been ultra free range and have often disappeared into the brambles only to appear with a big clutch of chicks. This means we have some wild and wonderful mixed breeds with an equally interesting range of coloured eggs.

The chickens have experience semi-confinement as they are often enclosed in a big run during the early part of the day, so they can adapt to a range of conditions. We are looking for a good home where the health and welfare of the animals is great importance.

They do come with 2 mature roosters who do a wonderful job keeping the girls safe from overhead predators. There are about 3-4 junior roosters who can be "harvested" very soon and will make for a good 'cock-a-doodle-stew'. We can help with that process if need be. In addition to a couple of senior ladies, there are 1 year old hens from last summer and approx. 10 hens hatched a few months ago. Will have to do another count but probably about 30-35 chickens currently.

I know you are wondering, "Where are the organic blueberries I ordered?". Don't worry, they are coming!

We have tried for a couple of pick-up dates that didn't quite work yet.

I am working with Ivan, the farmer, on new dates in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned and I will email you with the pick-up times.

It seems to be lost and is very friendly. Keeps following us around and standing beside us.

Forbes Hall Food Services Looking for Volunteers

The Food Services group at Forbes Hall supports both TICA and other island groups’ initiatives at the hall. This could be anything from a simple coffee and cookies service to dinner events.

We are looking for volunteers who work well with others in a busy environment with the focus of preparing and serving beverages and foods.

We are happy to train on-the-job for volunteers to do any of the following:

• Beverage Service: making of coffee and teas, set up of various beverages and services. Does not include alcohol sales or service.

• Food Preparation: the breaking down of raw ingredients and following recipes under the guidance of the lead.

• Food and Beverage Service and Clearing: efficient table service, buffet replenishing, clearing of dishes and readying for next course. Clearing at end of service, readying for dishwashing.

• Room Set Up: set up/take down of chairs and tables, and the setting of tables.

• BBQing: grilling, prep and cleaning of BBQ. This is only a few times a year, but an essential part of what we provide.

• Dishwashing: working as part of an organized dishwashing stream.

• Sales: taking/calling orders, dealing with cash, e-transfers.

This call out is for stand-alone events, although Soup’s On is usually a good partner when it comes to who knows how to do what. We are building a list of people who will be willing to help us when they’re available.
