New Wildfire Resource for Thetis Island

The TIVFD is very pleased to announce that we have taken ownership of a brand-new Wildfire Skid.  It will be deployed on the 1995 4x4 Command Vehicle pick up. The unit was donated to us from Global Medic, an international company aligned with Global Fire. This generous gift to assist with wildfire suppression on Thetis Island would normally cost over $16,000 US and we are looking forward to training with it.

BC Ferries Update: Terminal Work at Chemainus, Thetis and Penelakut

The Chemainus project is going well and continues to be on track to be completed the first week of September. While there was some lay down area at the terminal for this work, not much will change, with the temporary washroom and waiting room continuing to utilize much of the space. As I get updates on this, I will let you know.

With the work wrapping up at Chemainus, the teams will be shifting their focus to the work taking place at both Thetis and Penelakut. This work will be very similar in scope to that just completed, with much of the work taking place in-between sailings to avoid disruptions to the schedule.

For Thetis, construction is planned to begin Monday, September 16, with the first phase anticipated to be completed mid-October and the project concluded by the end of November 2024. Work will take place between sailings starting from 7:00 am until 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with the first phase not expected to impact sailing times. We will work closely with the contractor to minimize noise levels for our neighbours. To reduce interference with terminal operations, night work will be required in October and November to complete repair work on the timber trestle and vehicle ramp. We will inform neighbours in advance of all night work.

For Penelakut, construction is planned to begin September 3rd and is anticipated to be completed by September 13th, 2024.

Work will mainly be completed in between sailings from 7:00am to 5:30pm, Monday-Friday, and is not expected to impact sailings. Increased levels of noise are expected during some activities, and we will work closely with the contractor to minimize noise for our neighbours. Night work is likely required to complete repair work on the vehicle ramp and avoid interference with terminal operations. As we confirm these plans and connect with Penelakut we will update the service notice and neighbours as required.

A service notice will also be posted shortly with this information for those travelling the route, and we will update the community pages with this information as well.

If you do have any further questions about this work, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks so much,

Tamara Olson

Campfire Ban Lifted on Thetis Island August 30

The campfire prohibition will be lifted in all regions of the Coastal Fire Centre area beginning 12:00 noon, Pacific Standard Time (PST), on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. ON THETIS ISLAND IT WILL BE LIFTED ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 30TH.

Although the fire danger has declined in the Coastal Fire Centre due to recent rainfall and cooler, more seasonal temperatures, the public is strongly encouraged to continue exercising extreme caution with any campfire. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with regulations.

While campfires will be allowed in the Coastal Fire Centre, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, burn cages and air curtain burners. These restrictions will remain in place until October 31, 2024, or until the Order is rescinded.

Thetis Island campfires must have a Fire Permit in place. Go to www.thetisislandfire.ca and follow the link to Fire Permits to apply for a Fire Permit for campfires only.

The People’s Apothecary Garden - Plant of the Week #22 - Wild Bergamot (Bee Balm)

If you want a flower that will tantalize the taste buds of pollinators, look no further than wild bergamot, also known as bee balm! This native, perennial wildflower that looks a little like a Seussian pom-pom, adds a splash of colour to the landscape and attracts an array of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and even moths. Beyond its ornamental and pollinating appeal, this herb offers other practical uses. Its fragrant, lilac-purple, tubular flowers make it a popular honey plant and it’s been used for millennia to treat colds and to soothe the digestive tract!
