Monday, July 15, 2024 at 7:33AM One can never be sure where dwarf mallow might appear at the PAG. This sneaky plant has a tendency to rehome itself year to year, relocating to more optimal nooks. This year it has appeared across the garden from last year’s abode (I guess it had zero tolerance for primrose), wanting more space to spread itself. Aside from its mysterious ways, dwarf mallow is a part of a unique family that includes cotton, okra, and hibiscus. It is entirely edible and helps with intestinal and respiratory issues.

Sunday, July 14, 2024 at 7:20AM It's time for the Annual Sea Star Count! Come on your own or with a team to help us monitor sea star health as we count the number of sea stars in Clam Bay (all ages welcome)! Resident naturalist, Andy Lamb, will talk about the importance of sea stars, the impacts of wasting disease, and monitoring trends. Be sure to wear (grippy) boots or water shoes as well as pants or shorts that can get wet! If you can, bring a flashlight for those hard-to-spot sea stars tucked away in rocky crevasses. We will be meeting on the beach in front of Andy and Virginia’s house (120 Clam Bay Road) at 9:30 am. Please park at the roundabout at the end of Clam Bay Road.

The TIVFD members have decided on a contest for kids for the August 3rd parade. We would like an 8 1/2” x 11” poster of you riding in the fire truck at the front of the parade. Make it colourful and fun. Put your name, age, and your parent’s contact info on the back. You must be 12 or under and are able to wave and smile for the whole length of the parade because a lot of people will be waving at you! We will put a box for your posters on the “table” in front of the fire hall at 296 Mission Road. You don’t have to live here to enter the contest…you just have to be on Thetis for the Parade at 1:30 on August 3rd. Good Luck!

There is a fire at Harmac/Cedar. BCWS and fire departments are actioning it. Those who have respiratory difficulties should close their windows and stay indoors until it is under control or the wind shifts. There is no danger to Thetis Island. We are monitoring the event. TIVFD |
Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 8:26AM We invite the community to join us for a special gathering to acknowledge and honour Shq’ula’tth’us (refuge), the Hul’q’umi’num place name and history shared by Pune'luxutth Elder Florence James.
· When: 11:30 am Wednesday, July 17th
· Where: Marina Drive meets Pilkey Point Road, by the slough.
Elder Florence James will speak about the significance of this place in Pune'luxutth history, offering an excellent opportunity for place-based learning about this unique part of the Island’s geography.
Learn also about the more recent use of the valley beyond, over 100 years of farming.
Shq’ula’tth’us continues to be a place of refuge for wetland flora and fauna.
