Problem with Email for Campfire Permits

There seems to be a problem with the email address “permits@thetisislandfire.ca” for applying for a campfire permit. Although the permit season doesn't have much longer to run, I'd like to fix this.

If anyone has had trouble either sending an email to this address, or has done so and received no response, please let me know at veronicashelford@gmail.com

This applies to any other address associated with thetisislandfire.ca.

Thank you!

REMINDER: FORBES HALL WORK PARTY - SATURDAY, JUNE 8TH

Join us Saturday to get the Hall and grounds ship-shape for summer! Work starts at 9:30, it’s okay if you come a bit later...

A yummy lunch has been planned to reward the wonderful volunteers who step up to help.

Here’s an equipment list that may be helpful: gloves, secateurs, shovels, trowels, wheelbarrows (we have 1, a couple more would be great), rakes, 1 or 2 weed eaters and appropriate safety gear.

Note: Pressure-washing and gutter cleaning are being done on other days with volunteers already arranged.

Saturday’s Job List

1. Weeding and Gardening: lots of small areas to be worked on, detailed list on Saturday.

2. Take down screens, wipe clean, replace after windows are done.

3. Window Washing: wash windows inside and out. All equipment and training will be provided.

4. Wiping down of all windowsills, inside and out.

5. Water Tank: roll it into position beside the pump house.

6. Drag the outhouses adjacent to their new position.

7. Beverage Station: clean all drawers, cupboards and shelves. Sort items when restocking.

8. Plateau area by parking: remove wood and bricks, weed-eat area.

9. Move wooden bench by kitchen stairs to rear garden area.

We are looking forward to seeing an eager team!

Cedar Beach Pizza

Inflation has finally caught up with Cedar Beach Pizza. Effective Monday the 10 June the price of a pizza is going up about $3 each. We have resisted as long as possible and many of you have recognized the bargain our prices have represented with your generous tips. We have appreciated these and they have allowed us to keep our prices low for quite a while now.

So get your order in for Saturday or Sunday and take advantage of the current price! Updated menus are available. I think we still represent a bargain, and we hope to hear from you soon.

And thank you for all of your support over the years!

80th Anniversary of D-Day (6 June 1944)

The Allied invasion of Normandy marks a major turning point in World War II in the European Theater. Of the 14,000 Canadian troops landing at Juno Beach, 359 died on that first day. The Normandy campaign would claim more than 5000 Canadian lives with greater than 13,000 more wounded or captured.

Only a handful remain alive today to share their experiences and to be honored by the generations born since for their sacrifices in the fight against fascism.

Richard Norris was 17 when he landed at Juno Beach. Yesterday he lowered the flag in Summerland, BC, to honor those who fought. Another veteran, Bill Cameron, 100 years old, died last Friday, the day before he was set to board a plane in Vancouver to take part in the official Canadian delegation in France.

Thirteen Canadian WWII veterans attended Thursday's ceremonies at Juno Beach, which followed a performance by Metis musicians, Mitchell Makoons and Morgan Grace.

"On the battlefield, francophones, anglophones, Indigenous people and new Canadians came together as one. Brave Canadians like you sacrificed everything for our freedom," said Prime Minister Trudeau. "There are no words to describe the immensity of the debt we owe you." Other speakers representing their nations included Prince William (Britain), President Biden (US) and President Macron (France).

Most of us will never need to sacrifice our lives to fight fascism. Democracy, however, does require that we vote.

Thank you, Virginia V.
