Nature of Water Weekend Information

Reminding people that this weekend is our Nature of Water event.

Saturday has 5 site visits: 

10-11am  313 Forbes Road 

***Parking is snug at the top, I suggest people consider parking on Forbes Road.

12:00pm -1:00pm  237 Plateau Road

1:30pm - 2:30pm  195 Pilkey Point Road

3:00pm - 4:00pm 221 Pilkey Point Road

4:30pm - 5:30pm  217 Pilkey Point Road

5:30pm - BYO Picnic at the end of Pilkey Point Road.

***Parking again is an issue. It is requested that people park along Cliff Road.

In conjunction with the Sunday talks there will be an opportunity for islanders to have their water tested. Testing will likely be done between talks. Tests are free and will take about 5 minutes per sample. The meter being used is a handheld Oakton PCTS 50 that measures pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, temperature and salinity. If you have more than one well, you may want to bring more than one sample. The container should be clean and dry when collecting the sample (use latex or nitrile gloves if possible).

Samples should be collected soon before testing. If you are measuring water quality in your well, the water should be collected as close to the wellhead as possible. Water from your house tap may be skewed by any treatment system or issues with your water line. If possible, run the water for 15 minutes to avoid stale water that has sat for a while in the system. The better the sample, the more accurate the results. The test results will give a general idea of the sample's physical properties (it will not determine whether the water is potable). Mike Harris and David Slade will be able to provide their expert opinions and more detailed information is also available online.

If you are unable to bring a sample to the event, Mike Harris can be contacted to do a test at a later date.

Weekend Fire Weather Forecast

We are still in EXTREME Fire Danger Class on Thetis. No High Hazard Activities or open solid fuel fires.

SYNOPSIS: Changes start today and take us through the first half of the weekend. A low-pressure system slides down from the N/NW and will bring cooler conditions through the
Coastal Fire Centre (CoFC). Ahead of the low is a weak cold front rolling through the Cariboo and Kamloops areas today. While CoFC won’t be directly impacted by instability, our winds increase into this afternoon. Expect gusts in the 30-40 km/h range, out of the southwest. As this low digs south it will bring cooler temperatures and while some areas in the South hold on to the warmth today, we return to seasonal Friday and Saturday. Minimum Relative Humidity values will rebound with this change as well and hold steady in the 30 to 50 per cent range for the next 48 to 60 hours. No storms are expected with this low, but showers may develop in the Pemberton zone Friday afternoon/evening. Minimal accumulation is expected.

OUTLOOK: Saturday to Monday: Saturday continues to be cooler and calmer as we’re still under the low. Seasonal temperatures and light to moderate winds. Sunday, we start to see a four-corner ridge move into the southern portions of the province. Temperatures will increase by a few degrees for the south and drying will increase. This ridge will move fully over top of BC Monday and Tuesday with temperatures jumping to above seasonal and minimum Relative Humidity values dropping into the teens for some areas. The ridge will be in place throughout the week.

IEWG Summary on the 2nd Film on July 21, 2025

On July 21, 2025, Indigenous Engagement Working Group (IEWG) hosted almost 30 residents who showed up to watch the 2nd of a series of Indigenous films directed and produced by Gumboot Productions. for those who missed either film, or had challenges hearing the films, go to the website to watch them again.

After the film, the attendees circled and shared their thoughts and ideas, and they had the first serious discussion as a group on the residents’ Indigenous reconciliation journey. Some of the topics discussed:

• Listen and learn, alternative ways of knowing;
• The TRC (Truth and Reconciliation 2015);
• Seeking opportunities to meet and have conversations with members of the Penelakut community;
• Understanding dispossession and lack of access to a place they’ve lived on for millennia, and the personal reflection on our migratory settlers now living in the Coast Salish territory, struggling to understand the dichotomy of how the FN must feel not living here and whose home it was for millennia;
• We should put our money where our mouth is by recreating a reciprocity trust, an Indigenous trust run by an NGO;
• Educate ourselves before we start inviting the Penelakut people. One simple means would be to add more books to the library, including Raymond Charles's book, which should be in the library. Our responsibility as allies is to share our learnings from these 2 films.

The other easy yet impactful opportunity that James mentioned and is the organizer of is to attend the March for the Children on August 4th, 2025, in Chemainus. It starts at 0830h at the Salish Sea Market.

We need to be patient, humble in character, and grateful for living where we do. We look forward to seeing you at the March on Aug 4th.
