Join us as we plan the re-start of Soup’s On for the 2025-2026 season.
All those interested in joining in, whether you’re a newcomer or not-so-newcomer, we’d love to have you join us. Wednesdays through the “rainy” season of October through April, Soup’s On happens at Forbes Hall.
We served an average of 60 people over 24 Wednesdays in the 2024/25 season.
Our needs list includes organizers and money counters, table and chair set-outers, table setting and service, dishwashers, bakers, bread-makers, soup makers, and clean-uppers.
If you can do any of these, please join us!

Monday, September 8, 2025 at 7:57AM The Fire Danger Class is determined by fire weather indices calculated from weather station data, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and 24-hour rainfall. These indices assess environmental conditions, such as the moisture content and dryness of forest fuels, to provide a rating for the risk of wildfire and to predict its potential spread. A network of automated weather stations collects the data hourly to update the danger class, which is categorized in levels such as Low, Moderate, High, and Extreme.
Thetis Island is currently in EXTREME according to the Coastal Fire Centre indices. It is NOT the TIVFD or the Fire Chief that sets the Fire Danger Class. We check the weather station data daily from Cedar, North Cowichan and Salt Spring Island for forecasts, as recommended by our Coastal Fire Centre, and report the danger class as determined.
When the Fire Danger Class changes we post on eSpokes, move the needle on the image at www.thetisislandfire.ca, and change the FD information board across from the ferry lineup.
We were hoping for some significant rain this weekend for the fine fuels and coarse woody debris on the ground to soak up, but as of Sunday afternoon so far no luck. It might even be next Friday, according to the rain forecasts, that we get any significant moisture. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. We will keep you posted.

Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 10:35AM The Thetis Island Calendar will be produced once again!
For the 2026 edition, we’re looking for photos of native and naturalized flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial, plus iconic geology. However, as in the past, we welcome all photos of Thetis.
Cut off for submissions is September 20, 2025.
Only photos 1.4 mb and larger will be considered, and submissions are limited to 8 photos per photographer.
The top 14 images will be chosen for the calendar, with another 20 being chosen for the gallery at the hall (these may be used for notecards). All selected images will be used with photographer’s credit included.
Upon submission of your photograph, you are allowing TICA to use it for the mentioned purposes, and for editing to be done correcting for use and printing.
The photographers of the chosen 34 photographs will be contacted that their photo has been chosen for either the calendar or the gallery.
Photos do not need to be taken in 2025.
Please submit photos to info@forbeshall.ca by September 20, 2025.
Thank you in advance for supporting this fundraiser with your photographs!

Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 10:30AM ***DON'T FORGET TO RESERVE LUNCH IF YOU ARE ATTENDING***
Thanks to a small grant provided to us by Our Cowichan Healthy Communities, we are able again to provide a series of community talks. Starting off our talks is a series on Dementia offered by Jane Hope of the Alzheimer's Association of BC. The first two talks will be in person, with the third being provided on screen.
On Wednesday September 17th, Jane will be providing two talks.
10:00am to 12:00pm – Getting to Know Dementia: Learn how dementia affects an individual’s brain and behaviour. General topics include different types of dementia, stages and progression and dispelling some common myths.
1:00pm to 2:30pm - Brain Health: It’s never too late to make changes for a healthier brain. Learn how to maintain or improve your brain health by exploring topics including natural aging changes, dementia, risk reduction, memory, brain training and more.
Please Note: a simple lunch will be provided for those who would like to stay at the hall for the afternoon talk, by reservation. See contact information below.
Third Talk: Friday, September 19th
10:00am to 12:00pm – Dementia Friendly Communities:
Islanders are invited to join Jane for an online meeting. Connection information to follow. This will be available in your own home, or at Forbes Hall.
Join us to learn more about dementia and explore simple strategies that can create a more supportive, inclusive and welcoming community for people affected by the disease.
Jane Hope is the Support and Education Coordinator, for the Alzheimer Society of BC on North and Central Vancouver Island. She is a resident of Saltair and has been with the Society for over 20 years. Jane is just as passionate about her job today as she was when she started. In the early 90’s her mother was diagnosed with Vascular dementia, and this began her journey as a caregiver and advocate. Jane’s goal now is to help people live well with dementia and she is inspired every day by the people who live with dementia as well as the care-partners and family members that she works with.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
