Reminiscences from Keith Rush
In WW II, my Dad, a Canadian born in Vancouver, flew bombers (Handley Page Halifax III) for the 420 Snowy Owls Squadron (RCAF) out of Lincolnshire England.
My Mum was born in Brighton and was in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force.
They met, fell in love, and were married in 1949. They moved to Vancouver for a while right after they were married and shortly after that to the Nanaimo River logging camp.
I was born 3 years later (in the old Nanaimo General Hospital) and exactly 7 years after VE day (8 May). I can only imagine how excited they were at that coincidence!

Summer Market is nearly here!
Would you like to join us? Our first market is Saturday, May 17th and we run until Labour Day - every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The cost to you is $40 for the season or $10 to drop in for a day. That covers coffee for the vendors and the net proceeds go to the Thetis Island Community Fund which assists with health, education, seniors’ needs, etc.
Situated at Marylyn’s Kusina at the head of Telegraph Harbour, we get a lot of traffic from Islanders and visitors. We’d love to have you join us.

There are still a few pollinator and perennial starts available for late spring planting:
Figwort: a prolific and fascinating perennial you may have seen at the PAG or in our bouquets. Its flowers are tiny cups that smell like peanuts, and the pollinators go absolutely wild for them. Likes full sun to part shade and can tolerate wet soils. Available in 4” ($7) and gallon pots ($15)
Kaleidoscopic Grex Kale:
Dreams can come true, a perennial kale that comes back year after year! Tall striking plants with variegated leaves. Edible at all stages: early leaves in salad, later season leaves cooked or as wraps, and of course the broccoli-like flower shoots. Available in 4” pots ($7)
Email aimee.vand@gmail.com to order.
Thanks!
Aimee
