Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 7:59AM If you haven’t been in the Shop yet there’s a lot to browse, so if you are out and about, do drop by.
Actually, it should be called a ‘miscellaneous shop’ because such a variety of items come in.
This week an exercise ball arrived, along with a 15lb downrigger weight, a brand new camping stove with cartridges, some sheer curtain panels, new sliding barn door hardware, a garage organizer unit, some lighted glass shelves, a pair of brand new ladies cycling shoes size 8, a set of fancy Michelin tire covers, two work lights, a Wolfgang Puck oval skillet with lid, a downspout extender and lots and lots of jewelry!
Hope to see you soon.
Thank you,
Nan Beals
Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 9:38AM Parking at the Cemetery for the interment of Veronica Shelford today at 11:00 am:
The parking lot right immediately at the cemetery gate will be reserved for the family and the hearse. Please Park along St. Margarets Lane and walk down to the cemetery.
In keeping with the aims of green burial it would be great if you can carpool.
Give yourself time to accommodate for walking in.

Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 9:31AM NATURE HOUSE: WHAT’S ON TOMORROW
Coming up this Sunday, August 17:
9:30 AM - 11:30 PM PAG Drop-in & Harvest Hours (all ages)
Location: The People’s Apothecary Garden, 62 North Cove Road
Drop by the PAG and explore what’s in bloom!
2:00 PM Sensational Sunday Speaker Series: From Molecules to Empires: The Colourful Plant Chemistry that Shaped Local Communities and Global Trade (youth, adults)
Location: Forbes Hall
Dr. Rosado will talk about the incredible power of plants as chemical factories, producing compounds that humans use as sources of flavouring agents, medicines, and drugs. We will dive into a group of these compounds in particular - secondary metabolites - and discover their fascinating function within plants. With examples from herbs, spices, and local berries, he will illustrate some of these uses as well as their historical and social significance.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Abel Rosado is an associate professor in Plant Physiology at UBC. Outside of the classroom, his research explores the nutritional properties and quality parameters of culturally significant berries native to the Pacific Northwest, such as salmonberries, huckleberries, and salal. The Rosado Lab analyses their unique phytochemical profiles, bioactivity, and health benefits, while also evaluating key factors for commercialization such as post-harvest behaviour, breeding potential, and flavour. By bridging traditional uses and advanced analytical techniques, our work aims to promote sustainable local food sources and support the health of our communities.

Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 9:30AM Living Within our Water Budget.
Water Budget is a term used to describe the parameters around how water can be used without continually drawing down the principle and "mining" the aquifer, which can result in wells going dry, or in cases like Thetis Island, drawing salt water into the aquifers and into wells that were historically fresh.
Once an aquifer becomes salty, it can take months, years or sometimes decades for the salt to be fully flushed out and the aquifer return to its original condition.
If you are someone who is using groundwater extensively, particularly for outdoor watering and irrigation, you may want to consider investing in, or expanding rainwater catchment and usage, and/or pursuing grey water catchment and reuse for outdoor applications.
