Bake Sale Reminder

A reminder that the Bake Sale is happening next Saturday, July 30th and we are looking for goodies to sell. You can drop them off on Saturday, 8:30-9:30 a.m.  I will also be helping with setup on Friday morning and could take contributions then if you can’t get there on Saturday. Anything you think would sell is welcome; bread, scones, cookies, cakes, squares,  granola, you name it. Call or email me if you have any questions

FireSmart BC Safety Message

Warmer weather predicted for next week. While we are still in Moderate Fire Hazard Rating, this weekend would be a good time to mow & trim any long grass near your home and anywhere on your property.

In the event of a wildfire, embers can be blown downwind and easily ignite dry leaves, cones, and grass. Make sure that you clear a minimum of 10 metres around your home and any outbuildings.

Now is the time to take action. You won’t have time to get prepared once fire is at your doorstep. Learn more at

PUPPY REUNITED WITH FAMILY! : Yorkshire Terrier Missing

My dog Annie went missing this morning. She’s a little miniature Yorkshire terrier. We live at 107 Pilkey point, which is right on the intersection of Pilkey Point and Marina Drive in the motorhome.

She has been staying there with my husband this summer, his name is Dennis. And the phone number is 403-559-6029. My number is 403-636-1111.

Lawrence Valley Loop - Hornets’ Nest

The nest has been destroyed - thanks, Lynda Poirier - and the trail is open, but use the trail portion below the firehall with caution as there still may be hornets looking for what used to be their home.

Yellow Weather Alert Update

The Yellow weather notification sent for British Columbia earlier this week has been updated. A ridge of high pressure will strengthen early next week. It will bring an extended period of hot and dry weather. Next week’s heat is not expected to be as extreme as June 2021; however, it still poses a risk of heat related illness. The areas most likely to reach Heat Warning criteria early next week are the Central and Southwestern Interior, Peace region, South Coast (including Vancouver Island), and inland sections of the North and Central Coasts. In addition to the risk of heat related illness, fire danger will gradually increase in response to prolonged heat and dry conditions.

We have asked Emcon highways maintenance to try to get a final mowing of the roadside  edges before this heat wave but have not yet heard back.  However, while we wait and are still in MODERATE for the next few days, if you are able to mow or weed whack your property frontage along the road, this greatly assists with the safety of our summer pedestrians and also lowers the risk of grass fires from tossed cigarette butts.

Thanks!

Upcoming Nature House Presentation

As your island marine naturalist person, I strongly suggest that you come to the Nature House this Saturday at 1000 hrs. Conservationist/scientist Sheila Byres will be talking about the glass sponge reefs of British Columbia. These structures are unique and special in the marine environment and are in desperate need of protection. Sheila is an excellent and entertaining speaker who champions this effort.
