Still Holding in the EXTREME FIRE HAZARD Rating

BC Wildfire Service - Coastal Region - Fire Weather Forecast Issued: 12:00pm PDT Tuesday, August 30, 2022

SYNOPSIS: An upper ridge remains, with the axis situated to the east over the Rockies today then Alberta tomorrow as an offshore upper low and associated trough start to dig. Overall sunnier conditions are expected through the Fire Centre although some cloud may linger today through the north, with occasional cloud expected tomorrow as well as the digging offshore trough starts to pull up some sub-tropical moisture from the southwest. No lightning is expected today although we should see some develop to the south over Washington, with development possible starting early tomorrow through southern zones and up the spine of the island. At the moment things look isolated, and we should see it moving up from the south for tomorrow. Temperatures climb another few degrees through all areas, with very light outflows over southern regions of the Fire Centre pulling drier RH values all the way down to the coast and onto parts of the island. Otherwise, winds are expected to remain light inflow through other areas, with some afternoon gustiness.

OUTLOOK Thursday to Saturday: Ridging conditions remain into early Friday, bringing warm to hot conditions under sunny skies, with waning potential for convection due to shifts in the flow however things will still need to be monitored. The upper trough is then expected to approach the coast late Friday and quickly move into the interior overnight, bringing increasing cloud with light showers just affecting outer coastal areas for the moment. Winds associated with this feature are only expected to affect offshore and outer coastal areas for the moment, but like convection should be monitored.

CONFIDENCE/DISCUSSION: Good to fair confidence, particularly around possible convection for tomorrow. Not a neat and tidy pattern, and unfortunately has a lot of uncertainty attached.

6 TO 10 DAY Sunday through next Thursday: A series of ridges and troughs move through; however the trend is for southern areas to remain drier and the north to see periodic seasonal temperatures and possible showers as the pattern fluctuates.

Need for Quarterly Pick-up on Friday

Many thanks to the Cassels for picking up the Quarterly proof for us last Friday!

Now Island Blue is on schedule to have the Fall issue printed and ready for pick-up by Friday noon, if not before.  If there is anyone coming up from Victoria for the weekend, who could pick it up for us, that would be wonderful!  It's generally 3 boxes, roughly 9x12x14, possibly one of them smaller.

Please let us know if you can help out with this – it saves one of us making a special trip down and back.

ThINC Nature House Program - Thank you and Feedback!

Last weekend we wrapped up the summer Nature House program for 2022.

After two years of being closed/semi-closed, it was good to be open and busy once again! Over the course of 8-weeks we hosted a total of 66 events (including PAG and Seaquarium drop-ins) and drew a total of 613 visitors (including repeat visitors)! Thank you to everyone who came out to our programs and to all of our volunteers and guest speakers who made the Nature House program extra special. Also, this summer would not have been possible without our two very awesome summer employees, Connelly and Linnea.

Furthermore, thanks once again to the Porter family for sharing their amazing space with us, and to the Community Fund, the Government of Canada, the Government of BC, and to all of our members and Friends of the Nature House.

As we are always looking to grow and improve our program, please take a few minutes and fill out this short feedback form: https://forms.gle/xEzXZFt4prHrqGZ29

Thank you,

Charlotte, ThINC Education and Stewardship Coordinator
