News Release: Islands Trust

Lək̓ ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C. - With one week left to double the impact of donations made to the protection of KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest, Islands Trust Conservancy has shown their support.

With just seven days left to raise an additional $100,000 to meet their $200,000 fundraising target, Islands Trust Conservancy has announced an Opportunity Fund grant of $5,000 to help Raincoast Conservation Foundation and the Pender Islands Conservancy Association protect 18 hectares (44.5 acres) of land known as KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest on North Pender Island. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and the Sitka Foundation this donation will be matched, making it a $10,000 contribution towards the protection of this forest.

All donations made to the protection of KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest will be doubled until June 8th (World Oceans Day). Individuals who are interested in making a donation are encouraged to visit https://www.raincoast.org/forest/.

Bee Swarms

One of my colonies has swarmed  (approximately 10,000 bees )  They leave the hive when they make another queen  and chose warm days to do this escape.   The swarm has been travelling towards Sunrise Point or Clam Bay.  If you hear a loud hum that will be my bees looking for a place to nest.  It’s really loud- eventually, they will cluster in a beard on a branch.  If you see them give me a call and I can  try and pick them up.

Honey bees in this  formation are not aggressive and not dangerous.  Do not swat them or disturb them or they could be.  If you see them and smell bananas back away slowly- that smell is alarm pheromones - signalling the girls to be on high alert where they may become aggressive and sting you.

I hope I find them - it’s really sad to see them go

Anais' Vancouver Art Show

Hello,

For those of you who are or will be in Vancouver over the next couple of weeks, I am pleased to announce that my show "Drawings" at the Francophone Cultural Centre has been extended until June 21st. I am displaying drawings and lithographs inspired by my life on Thetis as well as a tapestry designed by me and woven by a French weaver in the Aubusson tradition.

Thetis Island Eco-system

I came across this CBC news info which I think is worth to post it  -  just to know and think about it.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/climate-and-environment/quite-urgent-spread-of-hammerhead-flatworms-in-ontario-quebec-poses-concern-to-existing-ecosystems-1.5925841

Especially with all the hesitance and arguing of people not to do their own composting. Well as many think it is so 'comfortable' to buy compost from off Thetis Island and be done with it!?!

After all don't forget with every load you may introduce non native critter and pest to our island - like the black slugs already. And you can't see any e.g. slugs, snail eggs etc. in any compost. The surprise comes later!!

With some off island bought compost or some very 'hip' new flowers and plants in nice pots or baskets from the garden store you may put another nail in the 'coffin' of our dying and changing native eco-system on Thetis. Slowly slowly one at a time.

Although everyone has all they need for composting on Thetis and could grow their own veggies and plants/shrubs and trees too. Still people are scared too get their hands dirty. I don't know why!?! I think making your own compost and growing your own plants is just fun and keeps you active.

Well imagine if our bylaws would be more useful too we could even have a community composting going on Thetis Island. I heard a lot of bureaucratic arguments about it. I just can only shake my head!?!

Well something for Island Trust to think about and support and make it work - now!! NOT maybe in ~30 years (Islands 2050)! Prevent a problem is better than programs to correct mistakes - see our plastic garbage 'recycling' issues. A problem of human society tracking on for decades from local to international.
