Vancouver Fringe Festival

As most of you know, I will be performing at the Vancouver Fringe Festival this September 8-18.  The festival is a big event in Vancouver. 70 different artists each present 6 shows spread over 10 days.  That's 420 performances in total! You've got to feel sympathy for the poor organizers. The venues are small theatres scattered around the Granville Island area.  In 2019 over 40,000 people attended.

My show is called "The Songbird of Vienna".  Here is the gist of the story:

It's the late 1800's in Vienna, the glittering capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Famed as a musical powerhouse, the city has been home to such spectacular talents past and present as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss. Hopeful young composers flock there but not all of them find success. One of the unlucky is Franz. Having given up, his dreams crushed, Franz is waiting for a coach to take him back to his hometown when he discovers a baby bird in distress. He rescues this tiny spark of life. One thing leads to another and through this small act of kindness his fortunes change. Luck, hard work and inspiration, love, friendship and confidence all play their roles on the way to a happy ending.

This is a story for anyone who has ever felt the joy of rescuing an animal and seeing it thrive - and it's a story for anyone who has ever dreamed a dream and tried to make that dream come true.

Wish me luck!

ThINC Nature House: Sat, Aug 20

1:00 - 2:00 pm: Swim and Snorkel at the Portal, 254 North Cove Road (all ages)
Cool off from the summer heat by swimming and snorkeling at the beach. We will swim along the shore observing crabs, sea stars, and other sea creatures. We will have a few ThINC members collecting items from deeper water to show more sea life off! There will be no lifeguard on duty, so parents are required to stay and help their kids in the water. The seaquarium will also be open for this visit. Bring sunscreen, floaties, towel, goggles, masks & snorkels for this fun filled day!

Note: Photosynthetic Biodiversity with Andrew Simon at Fairyslipper Forest has been cancelled. We hope to re-offer this event in the fall!

Pingulele

The open-to-all ukulele group will be meeting this coming Tuesday at Forbes Hall at 7 pm.

Same time as the Ping Pong group.  But even though we will be within earshot/snapshot of each other we will be fine.  And maybe each group will be able to poach some new players!

Summer Market

August 20th 10-2

One of the busiest vendors at our market is Marylyn Pegg. People are lining up first thing in the morning, ready for her fresh cinnamon buns, scones or pies.

Marylyn also makes the best Spring Rolls and dipping sauce. What a great treat for Breakfast, lunch or dinner. If you have never come and checked out what she sells in her Farm Stand drop by and have a look. Her shop has a wide variety of produce, bread, eggs, jams, chutney and much more.

Sharon Moloney's knitting needles have been "on fire" since last fall with numerous toques and dishcloths available for sale. Sharon also sells her beautiful cards printed from her original artwork.

Raymond Tony Charlie's book In "The Shadow of the Red Brick Building” will be available at Gloria's and Helen's tent (Jam Lady) or in Marylyn's Farm Stand.

See you at the Market

Helen and Gloria
