ThINC Summer Project - ROOT: Re-earthing Organics on Thetis

Good day Thetis Islanders,

This summer, ThINCpod 2.0 took on the challenge of community composting on Thetis Island! Over the course of eight weeks, the Pod connected with numerous members of the community as well as experts from across the province to explore the possibilities of an on-island composting facility. Their findings can be found in a 30+ page report - 'ROOT: Re-earthing Organics on Thetis', available on the ThINC website. For those not keen on reading the full report, there is a 2-page overview of the project. In addition to the report, we created two info-packed visuals: Composting with the ThINCpod (presentation) and Cultivating Compost on Thetis (infographic).

All these documents can be found on the ThINC homepage:
https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/

If you have any questions about these items or the project, please email
charlotte@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

Thanks and have a lovely day!

From the Library

Hello Islanders!

The library is now open during its usual times on the weekend and whenever the hall is open.
If you took materials home to care for during the renovation, you can return them now.

Some new materials:
Earthly Remains. Donna Leon. Fiction set in Venice.
The Last Bookshop in London. Madeline Martin. Fiction. WWII
21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act. Bob Joseph non-fiction 342
Our Darkest Night.  Jennifer Robison.   Fiction. WWII. Italy

DVD  A Place To Call Home.  A great Australian series
DVD Temple Grandin. A very well done story about how she has overcome autism challenges to do great things.

Enjoy

NUTRIA Invasive Species

I took some photos of a dead Nutria on the road near the slough at Pot of Gold corner.  This is an invasive species from South America and can wreak havoc in ponds and agricultural fields.  (It’s a vegetarian.). The Provincial government asks that sightings be reported.  Nutria look like a very large and well fed rat with a face somewhat like a guinea pig and a long, very thick tail.
This is the provincial link for a description and info on how to report:

TSOP – The Thetis Society of the Perplexed.

As time goes by, I have become even more perplexed about the current rules of socializing.  To avoid any Complexity in Perplexity or Perplexity in Complexity, the Society’s constitutive meeting will take place in the spirit and tradition of revivals.  We will meet under the open skies, on the field behind the Thetis School, on Thursday, September 2nd, at 3 PM.  John Lennon would love it.  Just Imagine.  Please bring your own chairs or be prepared to stand.
Has anybody ever said that membership in the Society will be easy?  jcerny07@gmail.com

Mt. Hayes Update: And We are Still in EXTREME

Other than the cooler temperatures and a bit of dew overnight in some areas, we have not yet dropped from EXTREME Fire Hazard conditions.  All the local fire weather reporting stations are reflecting the data…and the forecast is for even more drying.  The Cowichan Valley is now in drought level 5.
Here is the latest news story on the Mt. Hayes fire.

'It's not over yet': Mount Hayes fire still being held, dry conditions expected next week
