Odour of Dead Creatures

Like many others on the island, we have been inundated over the past week by a strong odour of dead animals along our shoreline.  We initially searched for a dead deer or sea mammal but noticed that the odour was also evident at neighbour's properties on all sides of the island.

CBC confirmed that "more than a billion intertidal sea creatures" died in the record heat of last week! This huge environmental loss is the source of our current odour issue.

PSA from the People’s Apothecary Garden

What we’d originally thought to be Corsican mint (Mentha requienii) last fall has turned out to be a lookalike plant called pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium). Although pennyroyal has been used traditionally in medicine, modern studies have shown it to have possible toxic effects on the liver, and it should not be ingested. Topically it can be used as an effective insect repellent, however we are planning to remove it from the Apothecary Garden come September and replace it with another groundcover, to avoid any confusion between it and our other edible mint varieties. As the pennyroyal was originally harvested on the island, should you come across it be aware that it should not be eaten, despite its similarities to the usual tasty herb!

More on the differences between pennyroyal and Corsican mint can be found in our post on the ThINC Facebook page.

Speed on the Water

I sent this to our Coast Guard but afterthought, the Islands Trust might debate this!

Let me describe a weekend at anchor off Penelakut Island. The peace and tranquility is routinely destroyed by hi revving speed maniacs on water craft attempting repetitive impossible acrobats at noise levels exceeding 90 db; over horse-powered "layer cake" fiberglass behemoths generating tsunamis in order to get to the next A/C marina plug in; and Mach lll speeders sporting multiple 350 hp Yammis.

If not for the sake of fellow, albeit sane boaters, (yes, you guessed it, sailors) who do enjoy transiting our amazing coastline; what about all creatures great and small who are forced to flee, dive and swim because of this insanity.

As a lifelong global sailor I believe it a privilege to own a boat. Highways have rules and regulations.

Everyone but the fossil fuel market is a winner if you implement speed limits in Coastal waters.

Cheers
