Nature House Module 3, July 16 – 17: The Moore You Know & Foraging For Fish

Join us this Friday and Saturday for two events! In the mornings we will meet at the Moore Hill Nature Reserve for an active  session. During this time we will discover the species and habitats native to this exciting ecosystem. Ann Eriksson will be joining us to discuss the history of this protected area, its rich biodiversity and citizen science in your community! Think you know your island? You can always learn "Moore"!

For this morning session, we will meet at the Moore Hill Nature Reserve entrance, please park on the west shoulder of the road.

In our afternoon session we will be discovering the importance of Forage fish in our aquatic ecosystem. This will include learning about their role in the food web, the sampling techniques involved in studying this critical species and a hands-on experience with our coastal aquatic life!

For this afternoon session, we will meet at the Nature House on the Portal property. Please park at the Fairyslipper trail parking lot and walk down to the Nature House.

Disclaimer: There is a short but steep incline involved in the morning hike, please wear proper footwear. A portion of the afternoon events will be held indoors, please bring a mask.

To join us for one or both of these events, please register here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l01psKv9g86TdiGAJzxeHgTlp1Xel8J-5wTWqCutLrU/edit#gid=1997068086

Are You Ready?

Wildfire season is in full swing. Would you have what you need if you had to leave your home at a moment’s notice?

Have a “grab and go” kit ready. Phone charger, medications, snack food, water, glasses, pet food and bowls (and your pets, preferably in suitable crates since you will have them in your vehicle), more water, toiletries, extra clothes (don’t pack for a cruise, pack for a shelter),  credit cards and important papers such as copies of your home insurance (you could plan ahead and put everything on a thumb drive to put in your kit), etc. You know what would be difficult to replace and hard to pack in ten minutes. (Put your photos on a thumb drive too).
Close all windows and shut curtains, close interior doors, and quickly throw things off your porch (mats, furniture, flammable objects) over six feet from structure.

Preplanning for a “bug out” will lower your anxiety if it is necessary, and gives you an extra few minutes to hook up your sprinkler protection kit (if you have one) and turn it on as you leave.

Lytton residents had less than 15 minutes to get out. Can you be ready in ten?

Chicks Available

Once again we have a plethora of chicks.
We are going to list approximately 2 dozen of them for rehoming.
I thought I would check with my fellow islanders first for any interest.
They are 3 weeks old, boys and girls.
I hope everyone is having a lovely summer. Play safe!

Extreme Fire Hazard

In 2018 the Trustees of the Thetis Island Improvement District approved Bylaw 70, the Extreme Fire Hazard Bylaw.

This bylaw may be more stringent and limiting than in other jurisdictions, because on Thetis, we are on our own. We have a small fire department, a finite amount of firefighting equipment, and a limited water supply. Unlike the big Island any assistance from Chemainus, Crofton or Ladysmith fire halls is hours away, if they are even available. And that is not even considering the availability of the ferry.

Currently, fire behavior potential for our area would be considered explosive. Please do your part to limit the risk, adhere to the Provincial Fire Prevention Regulations, and to Bylaw 70: http://www.thetisislandfire.ca/tiid/bylaws/TIID_Bylaw_70_Extreme_Fire_Hazard_2017.pdf

Add Your Name to the Health Care Directory

A productive meeting was held Friday morning with VIHA managers and a TICA representative working to bring better health care opportunities to Thetis Island at Forbes Hall.  The is a good probability that a Nurse Practitioner will be coming to Thetis on a monthly or bi-weekly basis, starting in the fall.  Those without a family doctor will be able to “attach “ yourself to the Nurse Practitioner program here.  Unfortunately drop-ins will be excluded, and only those registered can be seen.  This is what I was given for information on how to register:

“The Ministry of Health is aware that we have around 17,000 people in Cowichan who need primary care providers.  Cowichan is in the midst of implementation of a Primary Care Network and are trying to recruit Family Physicians and Nurse Practitioners who can attach people to their practice.  The Ministry has created the Health Connect Registry as a waitlist for people who do not have a Primary Care Provider (FP or NP).  The poster provides the direct location or the other way in is to go to the Cowichan Division of Family Practice Website:
https://divisionsbc.ca/cowichan-valley and look at the right side of the banner where it says “Need a Doctor” to register.

Or more easily, just call 811 to register.”

Remember you want to register for a Nurse Practitioner or doctor for Thetis Island and not Duncan.

Extreme Fire Condition

Would it be possible for Fire dept. to repost, what equipment you are allowed to use, ie: extreme fire ban, if possible? Seems to be some confusion.

Cheers
