Still Looking for a Thetis Island Home...

Hello everyone!

The Russell family is still patiently and enthusiastically searching for a Thetis Island home.  We are still enjoying our connections on Thetis, including the new weekend programs that THiNC is running.  We had a great time spotting birds on a walk a few weeks ago!  We also met a lovely family who live on Pilkey Point, and hope to reconnect!  (if you see this, email us!)

We are a very community involved family looking for a home on Thetis Island, where we can explore various volunteer opportunities for our family and grow in community.   We own a lovely house in Chemainus with many gardens and on a friendly and quiet street.  We are hoping to either sell and then buy something on Thetis or find someone who is looking to downsize and sell/trade in a mutually beneficial way.  We are looking for anything bigger than a city lot, with gardens or potential for food growing, that we can bike to the ferry from (so anything much past Clam Bay Rd along Pilkey, may be too hilly to ride).  The house does not need to be very big as we are fairly minimalist and like cozy spaces, although we would also welcome space, if that's what you have.  If you, or anyone you know, is contemplating a change, please don't hesitate to contact us, we would love to chat!

We look forward to hearing from anyone who may have thoughts or ideas for us, or knows of a property or situation that may be what we are looking for.

Enjoy the rest of July!

The Russell Family :)

ThINC Nature House - July 16th

Hi Thetis Island residents, we still have two available Nature House sessions on Friday, July 16th.

In the morning we will be doing a guided tour of Moore Hill. As this is a protected area, this is a unique opportunity to learn about the biodiversity, ecosystem and history of this area.

The afternoon session will take place at the Portal and will include discovering the importance of forage fish, sampling techniques, and a hands-on experience with our coastal aquatic life.

Disclaimer: As Moore Hill is a protected area, visiting this property without permission is prohibited. This event involves a short, but steep hike, please wear proper footwear.

To join us for one or both of these events, please register here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l01psKv9g86TdiGAJzxeHgTlp1Xel8J-5wTWqCutLrU/edit#gid=1997068086

Understand the Need for EXTREME FIRE HAZARD Fire Restrictions.

We understand the inconvenience of EXTREME FIRE HAZARD restrictions for many on our island.  However, we must be especially strict during wildfire season because we have no mutual aid from other fire halls arriving in a timely manner to assist, and not all of our trained volunteer members are available 24/7.  We have only a small contingent normally and some are away visiting family now that the travel restrictions have been lifted, some might be in town shopping, and some are away working off-island or on medical leave.  We can respond efficiently to all medical calls because they require fewer members to attend.  But bush fires require “all trained hands on deck”.  Fire Prevention through safety restrictions help lower the risk of wildfire during this season.

Although we always welcome new volunteers that can train with us, we are aware that many residents don’t have the time, the health, or the interest to become fire fighters to help protect our island community.

Please consider the restrictions and inconveniences as your personal contribution to community safety and supporting our volunteers . We are all hoping for a short fire season with no emergency fire responses required.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Power of Composting in our Community

Did you know that in many communities up to 30% of the solid waste produced is organic material such as kitchen scraps and yard waste?! And in spring 2021, Thetis Island residents imported over $10,000 worth of compost! Many landfill-bound organic materials created by Thetis residents could be used to create our own high quality compost on-island, which could be used by local farms and gardens. These actions would decrease garbage hauling costs as well as compost importation costs, and foster community sufficiency and sustainability.

In partnership with TIRRA, ThINC is working on a sustainability program proposal this summer to create an island composting system. We believe it makes sense to reduce the amount of garbage leaving the island, while decreasing the amount of compost and soil coming in. To do this, we need your help! Please fill out this survey to inform us about your composting habits and your interest in this project. All responses will remain anonymous and will help us steer the proposal and project in the direction wanted by the Thetis community.

The link to this survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/3PcqZmr7c7DkK9tKA

Please submit your survey by midnight on Monday, July 20th.

We appreciate all responses as they will greatly help with this initiative!

March For Children - Aug. 2nd

Quoting a CBC story on Monday July 12,
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/penelakut-kuper-residential-school-1.6100201
The Penelakut Tribe in B.C.'s Southern Gulf Islands says it has found more than 160 "undocumented and unmarked" graves in the area, which was
also once home to the Kuper Island Residential School.

Penelakut Chief Joan Brown "invited community members to participate in the March for the Children in Chemainus, B.C., on Aug. 2 to remember the students who were forced to attend the Kuper Island Residential School and to move forward on the path to healing and reconciliation."

Until then, let's all take some time to contemplate how we can work to improve relations between Thetis and our First Nations neighbours.
